A seven-storey building collapsed in Karachi’s Moosa Colony on Monday, days after the structure got damaged following heavy rainfall in the city.
The seven-storey structure was built on 40 square-yard land and got titled after rainfall in the city.
“The building was vacated timely prior to its collapse, avoiding any loss of life,” the additional inspector general of police (AIG) Karachi said.
Moreover, the police and rescue officials rushed to the incident site and cordoned off the area, and worked with authorities to clear the area from the building’s debris.
Karachi has witnessed multiple incidents of building collapse owing to the negligence of the civic authorities who have kept mum over the construction of multiple-storey structures in the metropolitan without government approval.
Torrential rains caused widespread flooding and damage in Pakistan's financial capital Karachi, even inundating the business district. One death has been confirmed in the latest spell of monsoon rains, adding to the 29 reported since they began last month.
People in different residential localities remained trapped in their homes for several hours as the streets were completely inundated with rainwater mixed with overflowing sewage. Essential health care services were also affected due to flooding in city hospitals.
Electric supply was suspended for several hours in various parts of the city as power stations were damaged due to heavy rains.
Several people lost their lives due to rain-related accidents, mostly by electrocution. Urban flooding rendered several neighborhoods completely inaccessible. The Pakistan Navy was also taking part in the relief and rescue operations.
