Parents ask whether anyone else charges their adult children rent for staying in the family house. Debate sparked in the comment with some approving the method and others being appalled.
Should You Charge Your Kids Rent? These Texas Parents Spark Debate
When you’re young, your parents pretty much handle everything for you.
That is until you’re punched in the gut with the responsibilities of adulthood.
These Texas parents wanted to make sure that their daughter was prepared for when that happened and started charging her rent when she turned eighteen.
The couple that goes by the name Bay7Ranch on TikTok said that when their daughter Kylee Archie graduated, she was told to start paying $200 per month within the month.
Father Cody Archie said as he doodled knives on a piece of paper, “Our thought together is that since [Kylee] has graduated, I told her... I been telling her, ‘June the first, our rent's due if you continue to live here,"'
The mother Erika however said, “I thought that was a little harsh, I mean, maybe a little leeway,”
The two continued to say, “200 bucks a month is plenty cheap to live like a grub in your parents' house.”
“That's cheaper than she eats in food. We think it teaches them a good lesson in paying bills.”
They also wondered what others thought of the practice and captioned the video, “How do you feel about making your adult children pay rent to live at home?”
While some did think that this was a good idea, there was also a majority that was entirely against the thought.
Some commenters said that parents were meant to support children and that they would not charge their kids rent no matter what age they are.
When one user asked if the two paid rent to their own parents, the couple said that this was not part of the discussion.
