This Redditor was outraged to find her brother’s partner had abandoned him during a medical emergency to vacation in Spain instead. She asks whether her reaction to the situation was wrong.
Sister Rips Into Brother's Spouse For Prioritizing Vacation Over Partner's Health
“AITA For yelling at my brother's spouse for going on vacation while brother was in the hospital”
A distraught sister took to Reddit to ask whether she was in the wrong for losing her temper at her brother in law who abandonded her brother during a medical emergency.
The emergency ensued when the brother was taken to the hospital for a minor issue.
"Last Friday, my brother went to minor care for what he thought was just a bad virus."
The situation, however, suddenly turned for the worst.
"It turns out he had sepsis and he was hospitalized immediately with a half-hour regimen of antibiotics ($800 a bag)."
She and her father flew down immediately out of concern. Her BIL however was a no-show.
"My father and I flew down to see him and found out that his husband had left Friday night to go on a short vacation to Mérida, Mexico with his family."
The brother spent days in the ICU with no positive indication of his health.
"My brother was in the ICU till Monday with the doctor unsure if he was going to survive."
The brother thankfully recovered.
"Thankfully we were able to take him to his home on Monday afternoon, but he has to get a battery of tests to see what damage this did to his organs."
The BIL however didn't return until their vacation was over. What more? They brought souvenirs.
"Last night, my brother's husband returned as if nothing had happened and was showing all the crap he brought home from Mexico."
This is where the sister could no longer take it and gave them a piece of her mind.
"I tore into him about how insensitive he was and called him a crappy spouse for abandoning my brother in a time of need."
The BIL claimed that everything turned out fine.
"He responded, "Nothing happened" and "my brother is fine," so there is no need for hostilities."
They also added that OP wouldn't understand gay marriage.
"He had also commented that gay marriages are different and I wouldn't understand."
The sister however was not having it.
"Where I think I went too far is I remarked that if a gay spouse means you are stuck with an uncaring bastard like him, I don't understand why anyone would get married in the first place."
The words clearly had an impact on the BIL,
"This morning my brother said his husband cried most of the night and I was too hard on him."
This emotional reaction had OP questioning their stance.
"So I'm thinking maybe I need an outside opinion because everyone with an opinion here is way too close to the situation to be objective."
"So, AITA?"
Commenters however were quick to flock to her side,
"NTA, purely on that 'gay marriages are different' comment. NO THE FUCK THEY AREN'T. It's one thing if he was already gone and couldn't come back, that I would understand. But not seeming to care at all????"
Source- "I'm queer and have a wife. Gay marriage is marriage."
"NTA - your brother almost died and his husband was apparently unconcerned. You got angry because you were scared all weekend for your brother, and the person who is supposed to care most, didn't."
"And btw - gay marriage is not different from straight marriage."
"NTA. Who cares if the marriage is between gay or straight people. You either care about your spouse enough to be there for them or you don’t. He wasn’t in the hospital for a broken toe. Sepsis is something that could have killed him. His husband is a selfish a$$ and I can’t believe they are still married."
"NTA. I love the argument 'gay marriages are different'. You had a full right to react the way you did. The relationship smells like a spousal abuse situation. As for your brother’s husband crying - I hope that he cried because he realized he is a horrible human being."
"NTA. I'm gay and if my partner had sepsis I wouldn't leave his side. The only reason I couldn't visit him when he had meningitis is because of COVID and I hated it."
