Snoop explained that a same-sex couple in Pixar’s Lightyear left him feeling unprepared to answer his grandson’s questions.
Snoop Dogg has spoken out after receiving heavy criticism for what many saw as a 'homophobic' comment he made on a podcast. His remarks quickly went viral, sparking debates online about parenting, representation, and inclusivity in films.
The issue began when the 53-year-old rapper took one of his young grandsons to see Lightyear, the Pixar spin-off that serves as a prequel to the Toy Story franchise. The animated movie included a storyline where one of the central characters has two moms in a same-sex relationship.
The brief scene left Snoop with unexpected questions from his grandson, and his reaction during a podcast conversation ended up causing controversy.
While speaking on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop admitted he felt uneasy about the situation, claiming he was 'scared to go to the movies' after the exchange with his grandson. He explained that he hadn’t been prepared to answer such questions on the spot.
He recalled: "They're putting it everywhere [...] They're like, 'She had a baby - with another woman'. Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie is like, 'Papa Snoop? How she have a baby with a woman? She's a woman!'"
"I didn't come in for this sh*t. I just came to watch the goddamn movie."
The legendary rapper went on to repeat that the experience made him 'scared to go to the movies,' adding: "Y'all throwing me in the middle of sh*t that I don't have an answer for."
When the clip of his interview appeared on Reddit, reactions were swift. Many accused him of being dismissive or insensitive toward LGBTQ+ representation in children’s films.
One Reddit user argued that his comments were 'blatantly [sic] homophobic of Snoop,' while another countered by writing: "It's only hard to explain if you're homophobic and trying to hide the existence of gay people to your children."
In response to the mounting backlash, the 16-time Grammy nominee turned to social media to clarify his side of the story. He explained that he wasn’t speaking out of hate, but that he had simply been caught by surprise when his grandson asked about the characters.
After Hollywood Unlocked shared a clip of TS Madison discussing the controversy, Snoop commented beneath the post. He said he wanted people to understand that he was just unprepared in the moment and asked the LGBTQ+ community for patience, even saying they should 'teach me how to learn.'
He added: "I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons. All my gay friends [know] what's up, they been calling me with love."
"My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6 yr old. Teach me how to learn. I'm not perfect."
Meanwhile, Lightyear screenwriter Lauren Gunderson has defended the decision to feature a same-sex couple in the film, describing it as a step forward in representation for kids and families.
She wrote on Instagram: "I'm proud of it. To infinity. Love is love," and added: "I was proud to see a happy queer couple (even for a few seconds) onscreen. I know they got a lot of sh*t for this inclusion, but stuff like this matters because beautiful love like this exists."
