Sofia Vergara had a brilliant comeback when a TV host made fun of her English accent. The Colombian actress has been busy promoting her new Netflix series "Griselda," set to release on January 25.
During her promotional tour, Vergara appeared on the Spanish TV show El Hormiguero, hosted by Pablo Motos.
They discussed her role as Gloria Pritchett in Modern Family, which significantly boosted her fame since its debut in 2009, running for 11 seasons.
While talking about the show, Motos interrupted to tease Vergara about her pronunciation.
"How do you say Modern Family?" he inquired.
Vergara quickly responded, "I say it wrong? Oh, because you speak better English than me? Ah," showcasing her wit.
Vergara, known for her role in Hot Pursuit, then highlighted her achievements in the American entertainment industry:
"How many Emmy nominations do you have in the United States?"
"How many times did they nominate you at the Golden Globes?"
She certainly had a point there.
Throughout her career, Vergara has received several Primetime Emmy and SAG nominations and was named People's Choice Award's 'Favorite Comedy TV Star' in 2020.
She was also honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015.
As Vergara delivered her sharp retort, the crew laughed nervously, and Motos quickly shifted the conversation to another topic.
Following the interview, people on social media criticized Motos for mocking Vergara's accent.
One viewer asked, "But with what authority does Pablo Motos tell Sofía Vergara to repeat how he pronounces in English? How important is that? It seems extremely rude to me (and profoundly abnormal as well)."
Another person praised Vergara: "Pablo Motos earned that response. I loved Sofía Vergara putting the person who tried to ridicule her in her place."
However, some viewers believed the exchange was just lighthearted fun.
"The interview for me was very good," one person commented.
"First, Sofia Vergara knows about humor and has the coastal spark and the guy has a heavy comedy program. The interview was very well prepared. She knew what she was going to face."
