You can tell a lot about a person by the way they act in times of distress. Someone may seem like the bravest, most courageous figure in the room, but as soon as the going gets tough, they crumple under the pressure. On the contrary, the quietest, shyest person may be the only one who steps up in times of need! Luckily for us, the hit ABC show What Would You Do? has continued to expose the different ways we act under pressure by placing unsuspecting people in fake situations and monitoring how they react.
Soldier Can't Afford Diapers For His Baby, But Watch What The Woman On The Right Does.
#1 The results are often shocking — especially this one...
The show set out to see how people would react to a struggling military veteran. So, they rigged a local grocery store in San Antonio, Texas with cameras and microphones, and they swapped out the cashier and customer with actors. The situation at hand? A military veteran (Ryan) doesn't have enough money to buy diapers for his baby at home.
#2 But how would the random bystanders in line react?
As the actor's fake credit card is declined, the woman behind him can't help but intervene. She explains that both her son AND her grandson served in the military and that she simply can't stand by without helping a veteran in need. Not only does she offer to pay for the soldier's items, but she explains that she runs a food pantry where she'd be more than happy to help the veteran and his baby.
#3 When the host of the show applauds her for her kindness and reveals that the entire situation was staged, the woman simply states, "We should be taking care of our military."
When they tried the stunt again, the people at What Would You Do? were shocked to see just how supportive many of the customers were towards those who have served in the military. As Ryan struggles to pay for his groceries again, THIS man gladly offers the cashier a $20 bill and insists that she give the change to the veteran. When the actor thanks him, the man assures him that things will get better. Time after time, random customers continued to step up and help who they thought was a struggling veteran.
#4 But one customer was about to demonstrate true kindness...
This man had sold several pieces of scrap metal earlier in the day just so that he could afford to buy groceries for his family. Along with the few dollars he'd made from the metal were several coupons he had cut out of a newspaper it was clear that this man did not have a lot of money. However, when he saw that Ryan didn't have enough money to pay for his groceries, he did not hesitate to offer what little he had.
#5 He didn't care how hard he worked for it — he just wanted to help.
The results of this social experiment are amazingly eye-opening, helping us to learn just how kind human beings can really be. These people didn't have to help the soldier pay for his groceries. In fact, it probably would have been easier for them look the other way and ignore the situation all together. But human nature is inherently good, and these people couldn't stand to see this man and his family go without groceries.
Faith in humanity successfully restored.
