The latest findings reveal the most dangerous state in the US for solo travelers, and the choice may surprise many people who often visit it for vacations or scenic road trips.

A newly released study that looked at safety for people traveling alone across the country has outlined which areas come with the highest risks. It also gives travelers a clearer picture of what they should consider before setting off.

Solo travel continues to grow each year, and the Solo Traveler's 2024 Reader Survey shows that safety remains one of the biggest priorities for anyone planning a trip on their own.

The survey, which gathered responses from 2,400 solo travelers, found that 22 percent had taken two solo trips in the previous year. It also revealed that 43 percent had taken three or more, showing how common the trend has become.

Safety played a key role when these travelers selected their destinations. Weather conditions and affordability were also major factors they focused on when deciding where to go.

According to research shared by Silver Law Firm, New Mexico ranked as the most dangerous state for anyone traveling alone.

New Mexico sits in the southwestern part of the country and shares borders with Colorado to the north, Oklahoma and Texas to the east, and Arizona to the west.

"Solo travelers face unique vulnerabilities that groups don't," attorney Elliot Silver said.

"When something goes wrong, whether it's a car accident, a medical emergency, or a legal issue, you don't have backup."

"New Mexico's vast rural areas mean long stretches without cell service or gas stations."

"Solo travelers here need offline maps downloaded before they leave, extra water and supplies in the car, and a clear itinerary shared with someone back home."

The team behind the study analyzed key safety categories such as crime rates, road conditions, public transport access, and emergency response. They relied on data from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and assigned each state an overall safety score out of 100.

New Mexico earned a score of 0.00, with both high levels of road accidents and violent crime playing a major part in its ranking. The study placed Arkansas in second place with a score of 10.39, while Tennessee followed in third with 13.68.

Even with its low score, New Mexico continues to attract tourists each year, especially those who enjoy visiting cities like Santa Fe for its art, culture, and outdoor scenery.

Jonathan Thompson, a travel journalist who has spent a decade living and working across the US, has plenty of insight based on his experiences.

Over the course of his travel career, he has managed to visit all 50 states and often shares guidance on the destinations worth visiting and the ones people may want to avoid.

He ranked Santa Fe in New Mexico among his top recommendations, along with Juneau in Alaska, Bend in Oregon, and Portland in Maine, each offering something distinct for travelers.

However, he also pointed out destinations that he believes travelers should skip, especially due to high crime rates. These included Clovis in New Mexico and Pahrump in Nevada.

Thompson added that Gary, located in Indiana, is at the bottom of his personal list. He explained that it is one place he would never suggest to anyone planning a trip.
