Star Of "ER" And "Dexter," Mary Mara, Passes Away At 61 After Swimming In New York River

Over the weekend, Mary Mara was discovered dead after drowning in the St. Lawrence River.

The 61-year-old actor's body had been found at Cape Vincent by troopers who had been called to a probable drowning report at 8:00 AM on Sunday (June 26).

According to a preliminary inquiry, Mara, who resided nearby, visited her sister and went swimming for exercise before she subsequently drowned.

According to TMZ, authorities claimed that there were no indications of foul play on the actor's remains. Her cause of death, however, is still under investigation, and an autopsy has been scheduled for her remains at the Jefferson County Medical Examiner's Office.

Mara's manager, Craig Dorfman, confirmed her death and shared a statement to Variety, saying: "Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met. I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in Mad Forest off-Broadway."

"She was electric, funny, and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed," Dorfman added.

Before attending Yale and San Francisco State Universities to further her education, Mara was born in 1960 and raised in Syracuse, New York. In 1989, she made her acting debut in the television film The Preppie Murder, earning over 80 screen credits.

Mara shared the stage with Gregory Hines, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Jeff Goldblum, and Michelle Pfeiffer in a Twelfth Night production by the New York Shakespeare Festival.

She played recurring patient Loretta Sweet in the television series ER, which was possibly her most notable role. As inspector Bryn Carson in the police drama Nash Bridges, Mara is also well-known to fans.

NYPD Blue, Ally McBeal, Farscape, Law & Order, The West Wing, Monk, Lost, Shameless, Ray Donovan, Dexter, and Criminal Minds are just a few further notable television appearances.

The seasoned performer was also well-known for her work in blockbusters like Mr. Saturday Night, Love Potion No. 9, and A Civil Action.

According to her IMDb profile, Mara's most recent appearance was in the 2020 action movie Break Even.

After residing in New York City and Southern California, Mara retired from acting and moved back to Syracuse.

Screenwriter Bob Saenz posted a black-and-white photo of Mara, whom he said he worked with for “2 great years.”

“This the Mary I remember,” Saenz tweeted. “Consummate pro, funny, sharp, kind, a first class human being. She was kind enough to participate in a table read of one of my earliest scripts.”

He added, “RIP Mary. You’ll be missed.”

Mara is survived by her stepdaughter Katie Mersola, sisters Susan Dailey and Martha Mara, brother-in-law Scott Dailey, and nephew Christopher Dailey. She was also preceded in death by her parents.
