Movie earns $1 billion at the global box office in just 12 days, one day less than the previous record holder, "Jurassic World."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Franchise's 7th Installment Becomes Fastest Movie To Earn $1 Billion
#1 Disney said Sunday that its blockbuster Star Wars: The Force Awakens broke the $1 billion mark around the world faster than any other film in history.
The sci-fi adventure movie reached the milestone 12 days after its global release. That is one day earlier than the previous record holder -- Universal's "Jurassic World," which was released earlier this year.
The seventh film in the "Star Wars" saga has made $544.5 million in the U.S.
After only 10 days, it is the fifth biggest film in U.S. box office history.
#2 Twelve days of Star Wars: film rockets to $1B at the box office in record time, including a mere $247.9M on opening weekend.
The Force Awakens has been setting records since its debut 17 December. It brought in a galactic $238m in North America over its opening weekend, besting previous record-setter Jurassic World, and set international opening-weekend records in Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe. It scored the biggest worldwide debut with $529m.
The film also just had the best Christmas day at the box office, and it captured the biggest second weekend, raking in $153.5 million.
"The Force Awakens" has also won accolades with fans and critics.
The world domination of "The Force Awakens" is far from over, however.
The film has yet to open in China, the second biggest film market in the world. It will open there on January 9.
#3 The Force Awakens biggest film in US and world history, and there are 2 more to come!
The previous movie to reach $1B the fastest was Universal's Jurassic World, which did it in 13 days in June. Jurassic World also had the benefit of record grosses in China. The Force Awakens doesn't open in the world's second-largest movie market until 9 January.
#4 Writer, producer, and director of the film, JJ Abrams will not direct the next tow, but will be producing them.
The reworking and remaking of the Star Wars franchise, as well as Jurassic Park/World has led studios to begin work already on new versions of Jaws, and Back To The Future. Meanwhile, Disney is going for broke as it has the entire month of January to soak in even more cash, trying to make The Force Awakens hit the 2 BILLION DOLLAR mark before the big movie month of February rolls around. The only other movie to earn that much is Titanic, for director James Cameron, but that was over the course of a year.
