A soldier has shared insight into a well-known theory about the type of food served to members of the armed forces.

When most people think about military food, they do not picture anything close to a fine dining experience. Army rations are designed for function, not flair, and they are built to last in tough conditions rather than impress anyone’s taste buds.

The US military provides soldiers with MREs, short for “Meal Ready to Eat.” These meals are meant to keep troops fueled during combat and field operations. However, the flavor and texture of these packaged meals have led to plenty of jokes over the years, with soldiers coming up with less flattering meanings for the MRE acronym.

There is, however, one particular meal that can raise more concern than complaints about taste, at least if a long-standing military myth holds true.

That meal appears when soldiers head to the dining facility and find surf ’n’ turf on the menu, usually steak and lobster.

YouTuber SADGUYRAPS explained on his channel why this specific combination can make troops uneasy. He referred to it as “that deadly combo” and broke down the reasoning behind the concern.

He said: "In short - it means you're f***ed," and added: "If you're seeing it, it's already too late."

So why would a steak and lobster dinner cause that kind of reaction?

According to the theory, troops are served this upscale meal as a morale boost because difficult news is about to follow. In other words, it is seen as a way to give soldiers something enjoyable before delivering information they will not want to hear.

In a military setting, bad news can mean serious consequences, and that is why the rumor has stuck around for so long.

"It's almost like the calm before the storm, but instead of a warning siren you get some overcooked steak and some rubbery lobster," said the YouTuber.

He went on to explain: "There's a longstanding myth in the military that when that surf 'n' turf is on the menu it can mean one of two things."

"One, that your deployment is being extended, which is something we do not want because we want to go home."

"Or two, that we're going to war, again something we do not want because we want to go home."

The renewed interest in this theory comes at a time when the United States is increasing its military presence in the Middle East.

This follows Donald Trump giving Iran a 10-day deadline to reach an agreement regarding its nuclear program.

Trump recently stated that he was considering military strikes on Iran if an agreement could not be reached.

His comments have fueled speculation about the possibility of a larger conflict.

"Let's face, they're not feeding you like kings because they love you, maybe they do, but really they're just trying to soften the blow," said SADGUYRAPS.

"So just know, when you see that steak and lobster that it's not just a meal, it's a message."
