Surrogate Refused To Abort Baby Despite Diagnosis. 3 Years Later, The Consequences Are Crystal Clear
#1 Andrea and Keston Ott-Dahl
Andrea and Keston Ott-Dahl had a beautiful happy family. They had friends who were a couple struggling to have a child for the past seven years. Andrea decided to become a surrogate for them. After making the decision, Andrea initially struggled with some fertility issues, but after a few attempts, the baby was on it's way.
#2 First NT Scan
When it came time for the initial NT scan, both families starred at the screen and were extremely excited! The family the Ott-Dahl's were being surrogates for, began to plan for the birth. When the technician returned to the room with the doctor, something seemed wrong.
#3 Something Looks Wrong
According to Keston Ott-Dahl: "The doctor said I don't know what your education level is with chromosomal abnormalities, but this is generally where people terminate. I think she has Down Syndrome." The families met with a genetic counselor and it turns out, the baby would be born with Down Syndrome. Keston continued: "She did have Down Syndrome and we were also told the baby could have a severe deformity. She could have autism, she could be blind. And a list of other things."
#4 Intended Parents Don't Want Baby Anymore
Just like that, the intended parents didn't want the baby anymore. After some deliberation, Andrea and Keston decided to keep the baby as theirs, rather than terminate. Initially, the intended parents tried to force the Ott-Dahl's to terminate, but finally decided it was their decision. The doctor warned them, he didn't expect the baby to survive.
#5 Delaney Defies Odds
From the moment Delaney was born, she defied all odds. She sat up before most babies with Down Syndrome, due to low muscle tone.
#6 Learning To Walk
She also stood up and learned to walk eight months before the majority of babies with Down Syndrome do.
#7 Doing Great At Two And A Half
Delaney is now 2 1/2 years old and she's doing great. She helps around the house with chores and even volunteers with the homeless! Here she is handing out Valentine's to the less fortunate. Delaney has taught her family how to become better people. Keston has now written a book on her and Andrea's experience of raising a child with Down Syndrome. We congratulate their family for Delaney's progress up to this point and wish them, the best of luck in the future.
