All In The Family

All In The Family is one of those shows that just would not fly in our current politically correct climate. It followed Archie Bunker who is a working-class bigot that is always bickering with his family over the issues of the day and the world. Back in those days, things like that were normalized, so no one flinched, but if a show like that came out today, people would lose their minds. This show aired from 1971 to 1979.

Welcome Back, Kotter

Welcome Back, Kotter was a fantastic show about a school teacher who goes to his old high school in the inner city in order to teach a bunch of trouble making kids. Think Lean On Me in the '70s instead. The show aired from 1975 to 1979 and is still one of my favorites from that time.

What's Happening

What's Happening had a short run from 1976 to 1979 but definitely made an impact on television. It followed three young black men who are navigating life, love, and friendship all while growing up in the inner city. They were good kids who were just trying to get the best out of their lives given their situations. There was a sequel called What's Happening Now that aired from 1985 to 1988 that followed the three men as adults.

The Beverly Hillbillies

This show began in 1962 and aired until 1971. The theme song basically sums up the entire premise to the show. We really loved watching these country folk try to live side by side with city slickers. Granny, perhaps, was the funniest character out of them all. The show was a real hoot!

The Odd Couple

This show followed Felix and Oscar who are two divorced men sharing an apartment together. The pair lives two totally different lifestyles which always lead to conflicts that would make us laugh our hearts out. The show aired from 1970 to 1975.

The Partridge Family

This show ran from 1970 to 1974 and followed the lives of a pop singing family. David Cassidy was the only reason I watched the show. He was a heartthrob that made all of the girls swoon.

Mork & Mindy

NaNu NaNu...Mork & Mindy is actually a spin-off of Happy Days. Who knew? It aired from 1978 to 1982. The show followed the life of an alien, Mork, who travels to Earth in an Ork to study the humans. He ends up moving in with Mindy, and the pair end up falling in love.

The Brady Bunch

When you think about '70s television, you probably think about The Brady Bunch. The show aired from 1969 to 1974, but re-runs of the show can still be seen today. It is a story of a blended family and the trials of what that means for all of the children involved. There is chaos, of course, but there is so much love from each character that it made our teeth hurt because it was too sweet sometimes.

Sanford And Son

Here is another show that would not have done well in today's climate. It was widely known for its quite edgy racial humor. However, it was also filled with a ton of running gags and catchphrases that many of us still remember today. The show ran from 1972 to 1977.

The Jeffersons

According to Wikipedia, The Jeffersons is one of the longest-running television shows. It aired from 1975 to 1985 with 11 seasons and 253 episodes. It is the second longest-running series that has mostly an African American cast. Tyler Perry's House Of Payne passed it up by just one episode, but The Jeffersons had more seasons. It was also the first show to feature a married interracial couple.
