She was discovered in 1969 on the Mel Tillis show by producer Billy Sherrill, who signed her to Columbia Records. It wasn't until 1972 when she recorded her first song, which was "Delta Dawn," a song she had heard Bette Midler perform on television. She was supposed to record "Happiest Girl In The Whole USA" but passed it along to Donna Fargo.

Her single reached the number 6 spot on the country charts and was on it's way up the pop charts until Helen Reddy released the single and it went to number one for her.

Her sales and chart hits decline and she signed with new labels, never achieving the success she had earlier, until 1986, when she signed with Capitol Records; she returned to the charts with "One Love at a Time", which climbed to number three. Her career was revitalized with 1986's Girls Like Me, an album that spawned four top-10 country singles. In 1988, she had three number-one country singles: "I Won't Take Less Than Your Love" (with Paul Davis and Paul Overstreet), "If It Don't Come Easy", and "Strong Enough to Bend."

But that's also when she began a downward spiral that saw her dating several different well known celebrities, including Glen Campbell, Merle Haggard, Don Johnson, and Andy Gibb. She also claims this is when her drinking and drug use went out of control.

She admits that she began drinking and abusing alcohol while still a teenager, but says it went out of control in 1979 when she moved to LA. It was during this period that she hooked up with Glen Campbell, who she says now was "the love of her life".

Though she moved to Nashville after her breakup with Campbell in 1982 and began to lead a more secluded life, Tucker continued to drink and use cocaine. Finally, in 1988, her family confronted her and persuaded her to enter the Betty Ford Center. At first, Tucker rebelled against her treatments, but after private counseling sessions, she began to improve. As Tucker was battling drugs and alcohol in the early 1980s, her career suffered. She recently told her daughter, Presley Tanita, that she would soon reconcile with Campbell, which was in one of her dizzy spells when Presley and her brother, Beau, called 911 to assist their mother. They are not sure what Tanya meant, but it frightened them.
