Hailey Wait is trying to enact change by decreasing the stigma against bumps, scars, and blackheads.
Seventeen-year-old Colorado resident and artist Hailey Wait said she started breaking out when she was about 11 or 12 years old "right around the time when puberty hit" and has been bullied because of her breakouts. "People would tell me everything from 'pizza face' to death threats, saying that anyone with as much acne as I had didn't deserve to be alive," Wait said in an email.
She is now bravely sticking it to her haters and bullies by posting inspiring messages regarding her acne on her Instagram.
But her Instagram profile – which has 101k followers – is a literal beacon of positivity for people going through the same experience:
" Reminder that acne doesn't make you ugly 💖 a heart full of hate does," she wrote.
She wrote in the caption.
"I just really want to thank you, guys. Since being more open about my skin imperfections, SO MANY of you have opened up to me about your own struggles and I want to say that I’m truly moved, and incredibly thankful to be supported by so many genuine human beings. I’ve heard your stories and seen more and more of you embrace yourselves for who you are, and to me, that’s the most beautiful thing in the whole world."
"You aren’t flawless, and neither am I."
"None of us are, and you don’t need to be flawless to be loved and accepted as a human being. We all have imperfections and we are all capable of greater things beyond our appearances"
"I decided to post selfies showing my acne because I just was so exhausted of hiding it all the time," her email said.
"I figured it would help my followers to know they’re not alone."
Wait (who looks incredible with a bold red lip!) truly has amazing confidence, but shares that it helps knowing she's not alone in her struggle.
"I started surrounding myself with people who were a lot more loving and supportive, and my confidence sort of sprung up from that."
Wait said that bullying has continued, but she tries to let it wash over her.
Wait’s decision to post her makeup-free selfies inspired countless other people to share stories about their acne struggles on her page.
We hope that Wait’s story inspires others to be confident in their own skin.
Go, Hailey.
