When Rachel Kennedy's numbers came up in a EuroMillions draw for a $223,000,000 prize, she couldn't believe it. However, a call to lottery bosses Camelot immediately put an end to Rachel's dream, leaving her "absolutely heartbroken."
Teen Missed Out On $223,000,000 EuroMillion Win Because Of Glitch
Rachel Kennedy, who was 19 at the time, couldn't believe her eyes when she double-checked her numbers on the app after the draw on February 26 of last year and got a notification that said 'Winning Match.'
She invited her mother and boyfriend, Liam McCrohan, 21, into the room to discuss how their lives might alter.
Her hopes and ambitions were swiftly shattered when she called Camelot to find out that the ticket wasn't automatically purchased because she only had $3,06 in her account.
She told The Sun: ‘I called the number thinking that I had won $223,000,000 and they said: “yeah you’ve got the right numbers but you didn’t have the funds in your account for the payment of the ticket so it didn’t go through”.
‘I was on top of the world when I thought I had won, but when I found out I hadn’t, Liam was more upset than me.’
Before they came in, the youngster, who was studying business at Brighton University at the time, had played the same numbers for five weeks in a row - 6, 12, 22, 29, 33, 6, and 11.
Camelot, the state-franchised lottery operator since 1994, issued the pair a 'good luck' message for future draws this week.
'We're aware of Rachel's story and hope she gets in early to buy a ticket for the next big draw,' a spokesman said.
After a UK player matched all five numbers and two Lucky Stars in the $67.139.339,05 draw on Friday, June 10, EuroMillions players were asked to double-check their tickets.
Camelot said it could only say that the winner purchased their ticket in a store rather than online at this time.
Unless the winner decides to go public, there will be no way of knowing whether the ticker-holder is a person or a syndicate. If they hold the winning ticket, players have 180 days from the date of the draw to receive their prize.
Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, became the UK's highest-ever EuroMillions winners last month when they won an incredible $225.221.593,24 using a Lucky Dip ticket in the draw on Tuesday, May 10.
