When you're celebrating a huge achievement, especially as big as graduation, you want those you love right there next to you. That's exactly what OP thought and decided to invite his father, his little brother and stepmom to this event. His bio mom was not thrilled.

OP said that his father and his bio mom had OP when they were just 18.

They were going to terminate the pregnancy but went ahead with it at the insistence of OP's bio mom who was religious at the time. When OP was just 6 months old, she decided she had had enough and abandoned OP.

OP was raised by his father and paternal grandparents until his dad met Anita. Officially becoming stepmom when OP was two, she took responsibility of OP and raised him ever since.

The two went on to do well and ended up as professors at an Ivy league university. OP also had a younger brother who was ow 8.

OP said that Anita was more 'mom' to him than 'stepmom' and that the two were very close.

When OP was 17, his bio mom decided to come calling again. She had moved to their state and suddenly wanted OP to develop a relationship with her and her new family. OP, however, felt no familial connection with them. When she told OP to call her mom, he refused.

Upon graduation, OP was awarded a full scholarship and received three tickets to invite friends and family to the event. Anyone else would have to pay extra. OP simply invited his dad, anita and his brother and extended the offer to attend as paying guests to his bio mom.

She was not happy. She was even less happier when OP basically dedicated his speech to Anita and his father, crediting them with al his achievements.

When an official approached OP to be introduced to his parents, he pointed to Anita and his dad.

Melanie did not stand for it and started crying. She said that it was 'insulting' and that it was embarrassing for OP to call 'an Indian lady' his mom instead of her.

Dad nipped the situation in the bud but Melanie kept making posts on Facebook regarding the situation.

OP wondered if he was wrong but felt like he had done the right thing by honoring the woman who had been there for him.

He also questioned whether he should be calling Melanie mom simply based on a technicality even if he didn't want to.

On the subject of being a different race than Anita, he said that since he was from a multicultural area, no one batted an eye at them.

One commenter asked whether his bio mom had been racist in any way towards Anita and he recalled an incident where she had allowed her children to call OP's younger brother 'Apu' from the Simpsons.

OP said that he put a stop to it but Melanie did not think it to be a big deal. OP also confided in his parents and they made sure Peter no longer had to interact with them.

Commenters were impressed with how clear-headed OP was regarding this situation. They also assured him that the decision on whether or not to call Melanie 'mom' was entirely his own and that no one could force him to do any such thing.

They also praised Anita for raising someone like OP who was able to navigate stress so maturely.
