Authorities in Texas have finally solved a missing persons cold case more than five decades after a teenage boy was last seen walking with friends in East Dallas.

Norman Prater was officially reported missing to the Dallas Police Department on January 14, 1973. At the time, the 16-year-old had last been seen out with his friends before seemingly vanishing without a trace.

Later that same year, investigators believed they may have uncovered a key lead when an unidentified white male was killed in a hit-and-run on Highway 35 in Rockport. Despite early hopes, officials ultimately determined the cases were not connected, and the victim from the crash remained unidentified for the next 52 years.

In recent years, investigators reopened the case and took a fresh look at the evidence, eventually establishing what they described as a potential link between the two incidents.

In late 2025, the Aransas County Medical Examiner’s Office uncovered a previously unseen photograph of the unidentified hit-and-run victim and shared it with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. That image made its way to Detective Ryan Dalby, a longtime investigator who ultimately connected the 1973 crash victim to the disappearance of Norman Prater.

Dalby later located Isaac Prater, Norman’s father, who was able to identify his son and confirm the match.

Because there was no usable DNA or fingerprint evidence available, experts said the rediscovered photograph played a critical role in bringing the case to a close.

Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said: "This resolution stands as a testament to the Dallas Police Department's commitment to the cases we pursue and the families we serve, no matter how much time has passed."

"Detective Dalby's dedication, skill, and compassion have not only solved a historical case but have performed the most vital duty of our Missing Persons Unit: providing closure to a grieving family."

The Dallas Police Department added in its official press release: "After 50 years of uncertainty, Mr. Isaac Prater has now received answers regarding his brother's disappearance."

"This case exemplifies the enduring mission of law enforcement to seek justice and bring solace to families, unifying them with truth and closure."

"The Dallas Police Department extends its deepest sympathies to the Prater family and commends the interagency cooperation and investigative perseverance that made this resolution possible."
