Dr Helen Fisher, Match’s Chief Scientific Advisor, says those lies are completely pointless when it comes to whether or not your date actually ends up liking you. She explains:

Those who tell white lies are no more likely to get a second date; no more likely to have gone on a date in the last year; and no more likely to have had sex.

So those lies you’re telling are literally doing NOTHING to help your game.

Twenty-four percent of men and women are likely to have lied about the number of sexual partners they’ve had.

But while women are more likely to decrease their number, men will usually both lower and increase their numbers (depending on what they think is best, I guess).

What other lies do people tend to tell on dates? Here are the most common lies.

Sexual history

About 19.2 percent people lie about their sexual experiences. This is a sensitive area and not many people are comfortable with talking about it.Sexual experience wouldn’t be a comfortable topic for one to bring up during a first date.OK, honestly, I don’t really blame anyone for lying about any of these topics. I would even go so far as to say I would rather someone lie to me about their sexual history on a first date. This isn’t a usual first-date-conversation material, and so it’s perfectly reasonable for people to lie about their sexual experiences.

Age

They say age is a much bigger deal for women, especially after they hit a certain age, yet many women say that men still choose to lie about it.About 8.3 percent people lie about their age especially if they know that the people they are dating will be intimidated by what their real age is.

Financial Status

They will try to impress the other person with a fancy job title and a ballpark figure of how much they earn. About 6.2 percent male lie about their job in an effort to impress the other person on a first date. They say women are attracted to men in power; the Alpha male, so his desk clerk job might not seem as exciting as if he tells you he’s a department supervisor or managing director of something-or-other.

Residence

Guys want to be desired. Just like women. About 9.9 percent lie about their residence. Plenty of reasons as to why a person might want to lie about the place of residence on the first date. First, maybe you’re a little creepy and that person doesn’t want you to know where he/she sleeps at night. Maybe he mentions that he lives in a basement apartment (and doesn’t mention it’s his parents) or that person is ashamed of the neighbourhood that they live in and would prefer that you not know about that part of his/her life.

Marital status.

Young love. It’s a beautiful, wonderful thing… that sometimes crashes and burns. To those who were young, alive and in love back and are now divorced, it’s a tad embarrassing. There is a stigma attached to people who are divorced and they know it. That is why whenever they choose to start diving into the dating pool again, they might conceal the fact that they had already been previously married.

Existence of children.

Many who have been divorced or who have children, especially when they aren’t the primary care giver, likely will omit this information from the first date altogether. Dating someone with children or baggage when you have none, can be overwhelming and many women would rather just steer clear.

Last Relationship

Guys tend to exaggerate when their last relationship ended because they don’t want to seem clingy and desperate when they are really just seeking companionship. If they tell you it’s been over for a year, it usually means only a few months (sometimes weeks).

Hobbies and Interests

In an effort to impress the other person, one might have to lie about hobbies and interests. To win over a smart and intellectual girl, a guy might start saying that he likes to read a lot and that he enjoys engaging in deep intellectual conversations with people
