Mary Thomaston is a mother and a professional hairstylist. After her daughter asked her for a funky unicorn inspired look, Mary wasn't sure what to do.

#2

She tried to avoid the topic altogether and even deterred her daughter, Lyra, from getting the look but the first grader was persistent in her wishes.

‘I told her if the school gives us permission then I'll do it, and they allowed it. Her hair is already really light so all I had to do was add the temporary color. I tried to talk her out of the shaved side because I thought she might regret it once it was done but boy was I wrong. She was sooooo excited.'

Pictures of the process and final result were shared on Mary's Instagram account. There were mixed opinions on the decision.

Many people loved the look, but not everyone was on board with it. Some people said that her daughter was ‘too young' and that this should be for adults. Mary had the perfect response to the haters.

‘Really? Because when you're a grown up with crazy-colored hair, people say that such things are for kids. It's a contradiction. I say why not let them have fun while they're young! Who knows what type of job she may end up with, but a lot of them won't allow unnatural colors. When you think about it that way, it's actually the perfect time to let them experiment with color,' she said.

She used Manic Panic hair dye to achieve the look. Mary also wanted to let people know that the hair dye has less chemicals than traditional sunblock.

As for Lyra, she's in love with her look. Although it does require a bit of upkeep she couldn't be happier. Since posting the photos online, Mary has received requests from parents and kids asking to get a similar look. You can follow her on Instagram under the handle, @marythomaston.
