Heading to the nail salon is always a treat. But with so many options for how you want your nails to be shaped, it can be a little overwhelming. Almond? Square? Rounded square? To clear up your confusion, here's a quick rundown of what each shape looks like so you know what to ask for next time.

#2 Coffin / Ballerina

BEST FOR: Acrylic nail enthusiasts.

BOTTOM LINE: This long and slim shape is squared off at the tip resembling a coffin or ballerina slipper. Meticulous salon upkeep is crucial.

WEAR IT WITH: Pale neutrals or simple nail art.

#3 Oval

If you have longer nails and desire a slimmer, more feminine look, try this shape. Oval nails also make your hands look longer, so if you want to slim the appearance of your fingers, this is a good option.

Shade selection: try with pretty and feminine pastels.

#4 Square:

Basically, this is a perfect square with no soft edges. Sure, with a square shape you *do* run the risk of your hands looking stubby, but it's great for those with short nails who aren't into a round shape.

Shade selection: This nail length can pull off a lot of bright or impactful colors without looking too loud

What it looks like: Long and super pointy.

Best length: This needs to be on a fairly long nail to achieve the effect.

Shade selection: they look a bit intense with dark colors so prefer this style with lighter soft sheer pinks, terracotta or blush.

What it looks like: Squared off at the tip with rounded edges.

Best length: Short but with about 2mm of free edge.

Shade selection: "Again since this is good on shorter nails, you can try it with dramatic and dark colors."

Almond and oval nails are a very common pick for celebrities. With almond, the nail is slender on the sides and wide on the base, coming to a peak—reminiscent of an actual almond.

Shade selection: Like the name, almond nails look lovely with neutral colors and nudes.

BEST FOR: Elongating short or stubby fingers.

BOTTOM LINE: Simple and classic, round shapes are the easiest to maintain at home or in between salon visits. The short length and natural curved edge are a no-fuss option for anyone who puts their fingers to work.

WEAR IT WITH: Any shade from the sheerest nudes to the boldest brights.
