Nick Cassavetes apologized for 'spilling the beans' and sends message out to the iconic duo
The Notebook Director Apologizes After Revealing Ryan Gosling And Rachel McAdams Hated Each Other
The director of The Notebook, Nick Cassavetes, has recently apologized for ‘spilling the beans’ about the mutual dislike between the film's leading stars.
Despite collaborating on what many fans and critics consider one of the best romantic movies ever made, it's no secret now that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams struggled to get along during the production.
This revelation came to light after Cassavetes shared some behind-the-scenes drama, shedding light on their turbulent working relationship.
In a 2014 interview, Cassavetes let slip that the off-screen relationship between Noah and Allie was far from the romantic bliss portrayed on screen.
Golden Globe-winning actor Gosling even went to the extent of asking the higher-ups to replace McAdams.
Speaking to VH1 at the time, Cassavetes recalled, "Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set.”
“Really not. Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick, come here.’”
“He’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?’”
"I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.’"
The tension was palpable, and it seemed like an impossible situation.
Cassavetes continued to describe the incident: "We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other.”
“I walked out and it got better after that, you know? They had it out. I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.
“The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”
This confrontation might have been uncomfortable, but it ultimately led to a better working relationship for the remainder of the shoot.
Now, 20 years after The Notebook first hit theaters and 10 years since this off-screen drama was made public, Cassavetes has issued an apology to the iconic duo.
Reflecting on the film's anniversary during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he said, "The last time I did an interview on this thing, I spilled the beans on that.”
“I regretted it. Everyone's like, why are you telling that? I'm like, I don't know.”
“It caught me on a bad day, but if [McAdams and Gosling] are around, I apologize to you guys. I shouldn't have spilled the beans."
Cassavetes' regret shows that even directors sometimes wish they could take back their words, especially when it affects the reputations of those involved.
Interestingly, the journey for Gosling and McAdams didn't end with the conclusion of the movie.
Despite their on-set struggles, they began dating in real life. Their relationship lasted for two years, from 2005 to 2007.
During this time, they even shared a memorable moment at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards, where they accepted the award for Best Kiss.
Their real-life romance added another layer to the story, proving that sometimes, the most unlikely connections can develop into something more meaningful.
