The Worst Costume Mistakes Ever Made In Film History

#1 Braveheart

Scots did not wear the kilt until the 17th century. They wore the saffron shirt prior to that (in Braveheart's time). However, Mel Gibson's character can be seen rocking one throughout the entire Braveheart movie, which takes place in the 1300s.

#2 Django Unchained

Despite the fact that sunglasses weren't worn in America until the year 1929, Jamie Foxx can be seen sporting a nice pair throughout this Tarantino epic set about 70 years prior.

In several scenes throughout the film, characters are shown wearing pants which have belt loops. While belts were used in the past, belt loops on pants did not come into usage until the 20th century.

#3 My Girl

Vada's mood ring couldn't have existed because they weren't invented until 1975. The film is supposed to take place in 1972.

Vada loses the right handlebar streamer in the garage, but later in the movie it's the left streamer that is missing. At the very end we see that she has both streamers.

#4 Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade

In this film, and in Raiders of the Lost Ark, the German vehicles are clearly marked with the DAK (Deutsch Afrika Korp) symbol (a swastika over a palm tree.) The DAK and its symbol were not created until 1941 when Hitler tried to rescue his Italian allies in North Africa.

All of those Nazis that Harrison Ford fights are wearing war medals that were used during WWII. However, the film is supposed to take place before the war even happened.

In various scenes, Dr. Elsa Schneider (Alison Doody) is wearing the M43 (Mountain Cap). That cap was introduced in 1943.

#5 Schindler's List

In the scene where the women are laying in their bunks in the work camp and one lady is describing what she heard about the horrors of other concentration camps, at the end one woman puts up her hands to her face. You can see her fingernails are neatly manicured, something you'd think wouldn't be possible in a forced labor camp.

Have you ever noticed that all of the women in the film have shaven legs and armpits? Not only is it hard to believe that the women in the concentration camps were so concerned about their body hair, but shaving wasn't much of a trend for European women in the 1940s.

#6 Pirates Of The Caribbean

Just as Jack says, "On deck, you scabrous dogs," to the very left edge of the screen over Jack's shoulder is a grip crew member with a tan cowboy hat, white short sleeve tee shirt and sunglasses, just standing there looking out to sea.

Elizabeth would not have slept undercovers, nor would she have needed a bed warmer in Jamaica in an un-air conditioned room.

#7 Singin' In The Rain

In Gene Kelly's 'Singing in the Rain' sequence, the taps he makes do not match up with the actual movements of his feet - they are much more complicated than the steps he makes. Since one can't tap dance in wet loafers, Kelly had to do the dance in the studio, and the taps were added into the picture. He apparently got a little overzealous.

The pink, poofy gown that Cathy wears in this scene was a very popular look in the 1950s, however the film is supposed to take place in the '20s. Awkward...

#8 Seabiscuit

Many of the main characters are using modern-day binoculars (black, plastic) throughout the entire movie.

In the final race, Red Pollard is shown with a number 9 on his sleeve, indicating Seabiscuit's starting position. In fact, Seabiscuit had the number 1 starting position (this can be seen on historical footage).

Jockeys did not wear goggles and their skullcaps did not have chinstraps in the 1930's. Protective equipment for jockeys was practically non-existent during Seabiscuit's racing days.

#9 The Aviator

Some of the glasses in the film are too thin and modern to belong to the time period, such as the ones that Robert Gross wears. As well, his lenses, as well as those of Senator Brewster, reflect light with the distinctive iridescent green/purple of non-reflective coating, which was not available back then.

#10 Pearl Harbour

Early in the film, a close-up of Rafe in his Army Air Corps uniform shows his wings. The wings are not Army Air Corps, but the "shield and stripes" of the US Air Force, which did not exist at that time.

In the scene where the nurses walk among the flag-draped coffins after the attack, the nurses are in stylish civilian outfits. Those nurses are all Naval personnel, and once war was declared they were ordered to be in uniform at all times, except when in the privacy of their quarters.

The nurses are wearing far too much make up when on duty: bright red lipstick, eyeliner, mascara and blusher expertly applied. Military medical nurses are allowed subtle skin tone make up and surgical nurses none at all. It's always been that way, right back to the 1890s when the British Army first hired nurses.

Almost none of the women in the film are seen wearing nylon stockings, even though this was commonplace before WWII.

#11 The Ten Commandments

Though this film has a ton of historical inaccuracies, one of the most obvious is Nefertiti's dress. The dye needed to make a dress that color simply doesn't exist in nature and therefore couldn't be made at that time in history.

Also, all of the women in the film have 1950's-style haircuts.

#12 Amadeus

In the scene where Constanza starts to undress in Salieri's rooms, it is revealed she is wearing a 1980s style strapless bustier with separate bust cups and lots of frothy lace. This is not historically accurate. Women wore corsets which shaped their torso into a conical shape, pushed the bust together and up, and they generally had shoulder straps. The corsets were also mostly unembellished, so as to keep a neat silhouette under tightly fitted dresses.

During the ballet scene in the Marriage of Figaro, many of the costumes worn by the dancers have visible zippers on them, which of course weren't invented until 120 years after Mozart's death.

#13 American Hustle

When Irving goes to see Carmine near the end of the film, his glasses start out being tinted, but when he takes them off, as Carmine hits and kicks him, the tint has gone; even outside they're tint-free.

See that Rolex below? It was made in 2010, but the movie takes place in the '70s. Weird.

#14 Dirty Dancing

Notice Baby's white Keds shoes with the blue emblem on the back of them. That style of Keds didn't come out until the 80s.

Knee pads are visible on Johnny during the dance at the end.

Throughout the film, Baby can be seen sporting a cute pair of denim shorts that were made popular throughout the 1980s. Too bad the film was set in the '60s!

#15 Alien

When Ripley sits in the escape pod, she secures her seat belts. As she flushes the alien the belts are on then off then on again.

During the alien chest-burster/death of Kane sequence, Kane's shirt switches back and forth from being tucked-in, to being un-tucked throughout the scene.

When the search party goes into the boneship, they are wearing full space suits, and hoods under their helmets. When Kane's helmet is first cut off, he has no hood on.

#16 The Empire Strikes Back

When the Falcon leaves Hoth and is being chased by the Empire, there is a scene where the ship gets rocked about. During the 'impact', C-3PO's arm becomes dislodged, and you can clearly see human skin underneath.

When Leia and Lando are holding off the stormtroopers while Chewbacca and the droids escape into the Millennium Falcon, a stormtrooper comes running through the doorway. You can see the burn mark on his armour before Lando shoots him. When the trooper is shot, another trooper comes running through the door, also with a burn mark on his armour. Then Leia shoots another (or perhaps the same) trooper, and the burn mark is once again there before the trooper is hit (watch in slow motion).

When one of the Storm Troopers unties Solo before he is put into the carbonite, watch his wardrobe - he has a disappearing / reappearing jacket on. This is fixed to an extent on the DVD - the jacket is now lightened to almost match his shirt, but it's still shiny like leather.

#17 The Wizard Of Oz

During the sequence where Dorothy meets the Scarecrow, Dorothy's pigtails are first short (above her shoulders) and as the song progresses her hair gets longer (below her shoulders), then short, and then long again.

When Scarecrow, Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion are marching into the Wicked Witch's castle after taking the guards' uniforms, all three of them are shown holding the same types of spears as the guards, so when they go rescue Dorothy out of the locked room and Tin Man chops through the door with his axe, where did the axe come from?

During the scene when Dorothy and Scarecrow are fighting with the trees, Scarecrow says "I'll show you how to get apples" and he gets hit by the apples. In the very next shot, a quick view of Dorothy reveals she is wearing black shoes, not her ruby slippers.

#18 The Avengers

When Maria Hill is being attended to after she gets hurt, her earpiece is on the left side of her face. In the next shot she is talking to Nick Fury and her earpiece is on the right.

When Steve Rogers first meets Bruce Banner, Rogers' hair keeps changing between being neat and being blown apart, depending on the angle.

For a brief moment during the battle at the end, the scar on Tony Stark's left cheek vanishes after saying "I will, roger that" to Hawkeye. It reappears shortly afterwards.

During the big battle against the Chitauri, Captain America is zapped with a blaster bolt. When Thor helps him to his feet we can see a significant amount of damage done to his suit, just below the star on the right hand side. But later on after Iron Man destroys the Chitauri ship with the nuke, the damage is completely gone.

#19 The Wedding Singer

At the first wedding, the left hand side (as we look at it) of the bow tie that the brother of the groom is wearing, keeps appearing and disappearing from his collar.

In the scene where Robbie and Julia are practicing her wedding kiss, her necklace and hair shift position on each shot.

Though the film takes place in the 80s, and points out some of the decades oddest fashion trends, Drew Barrymore's hairstyle is oddly reminiscent of the 1990s.

#20 The Informant

The film takes place in the early 1990s and show's characters wearing some pretty cool looking Nike golf shoes when on the course. However, Nike didn't even manufacture golf shoes until 1996...

#21 Gladiator

Before Maximus enters the colliseum, he selects a helmet and places it on his head. On the rack is a copy of a saxon helmet found at Sutton Hoo, England and part of the treasure found at that location. Unfortunately this is a 7th century design.

There are several points in the film that show horses with saddles and stirrups. Pretty odd as the stirrup didn't arrive in Europe from China until the 3rd or 4th Century at the earliest.

In this iconic scene, Russel Crowe's shorts can be seen underneath his tunic, and I think it's safe to say that nobody in Ancient Rome had bike shorts...
