#1 Couple finds and rescues a stranded dolphin whilst taking wrong turn.
Lorraine Culloch and her boyfriend Mike spent a wonderful day on the Scottish coast of Aberdeen photographing orcas. While on the way home, the navigation system in the vehicle sent them on a wrong turn towards the inlet of a nearby river. But Lorraine was actually thankful for the mistake, as it led them to a stranded animal in serious need of help.
#2 A series of wrong turns put the pair in just the right spot to save a stranded bottlenose dolphin.
Right away they ran over to see if the dolphin was still alive, and they could tell from the marks on her skin that she had been stranded there for some time. Because of the low tide, they weren't able to manoeuvre her into deeper water, so they covered her with wet towels and called for help.
#3 They immediately called local wildlife rescue officials.
They contacted the police, the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) and the Scottish SPCA. Rescuers came quickly and took charge of the situation while Lorraine stood back and took photos of the dramatic rescue.
#4 Rescuers sat with the dolphin for some ten hours.
Rescuers spent 10 hours keeping the stranded dolphin moist and alive until the tide finally came in enough for them to carry her out into the bay. They held her in the water until she regained her strength and could swim away.
#5 Much to the delight of everyone involved, the dolphin managed to swim for deeper water, and it appeared to be strong and healthy.
One wrong turn saved the life of a beautiful creature! "I am delighted to say it was a huge success and the last sighting of her was swimming strong in an outwards direction. A massive WELL DONE to all involved - an amazing team of people."
