Omayra (28. August 1972 to 16. November 1985) was a 13 year old girl from Armero, Columbia, was killed when the Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted. Volcanic rock combined with ice and rolled down the mountains killing almost 25000 people. Armero and 13 other villages were destroyed.

Omayra was jammed by rock and couldn't be freed. She spent 3 days prisoned in the water. Her horrifying ordeal was documented, as it changed from relative calm to terrible agony. Her courage and dignity impressed the journalists and helpers present, who did everything that they could to help her. Unable to succeed, they had to stand helplessly by and watch her die. They tried to make her final days as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. After 60 hours, she died due to the cold and her injuries. She was a symbol that although no official help came, helpers still voluntarily tried to help her - despite their lack of supplies and equipment.
