Tampons and pads are made out of cotton. To produce cotton pesticides and other poisons are often used and of course, the residue is still to be found in the tampons.

As was recently reported on German radio, a study at the University La Plata in Argentina showed that in 85 percent of all available tampons and other cotton hygiene products, the dangerous substances were ascertained. Among others, there was the plant poison that is used in Monsanto for the pesticide "Round up", which contains the carcinogenic substance glyphosate.

These pesticides have a complete list of negative side effects to one's health: they can attack the nervous system, the immune system and the organs. Apart from cancer, they can also cause allergies, asthma and chronic illnesses, and in addition, they can also disrupt the body's hormone balance and lead to depression. During a birth they can also damage the embryo and could even result in premature births or miscarriages.

Moreover, it may lead to the accumulation of bacteria in the humid climate in the vagina, which can lead to Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). This can be deadly and in September 2015, the 13 year old swimmer, Jemma-Louise Roberts from England, even lost her life.

#3 But what can one do against it? Take specific notice of the packet, of course, and inform yourself about your own home brands. Or of course: one can acquire alternative products like the not-so-well-known menstrual cup.

There has been a patent for a tampon replacement since the 30s. It goes by the fascinating name of "Menstrual Cup". In Germany there are many different types available and most of them are made out of silicon to deter any allergies.

They are also available in different sizes, they are cup-shaped, white, see-through, pink or blue, and hold between 15 and 42 millilitres. The advantage of these cups is obvious: no poison enters the body along with it and they are reusable, and therefore also environmentally friendly. In addition they can barely be felt in the body, one can use them during sport, and they are practically invisible for everyday use. Furthermore, some women even claim that they have less menstrual pain when using the cup - and if the cup is well cleaned, it's hardly possible to get an infection or toxic shock syndrome.

The menstrual cups are a little more difficult to use as tampons, but once you've practiced a little it becomes really easy. One also saves a lot of money, and the menstrual cup can be simply washed, disinfected and reused for years because silicon is a very stable substance and low-maintenance.

Therefore: a good reason to change, for your own health and also for love of the environment. Hence: be mindful of what is in your hygiene products and replace them when they're no longer good because tampons can be really dangerous.
