A 17-year-old boy got suspended because of wearing nail polish

A Texas youth who is gay publicly blamed his high school for wearing nail polish after they issued him an in-school suspension. 17-year-old Trevor Wilkinson said after he got back from Thanksgiving break with his nails painted, he initially earned the suspension on Monday. This obviously breached the dress code of his school, only because he is a boy as it is allowed to be enforced to girls.

"Imagine your school not allowing boys to paint their nails and giving boys iss [in-school suspension] for it," he said in a tweet on Monday. "And the whole administration being okay with it, homophobic and sexist? Welcome to west texas."

Wilkinson created a Change.org petition the day he was issued detention

NBC estimates that Wilkinson comes from Clyde, a town has a population of just under 4,000, situated about 135 miles west of Fort Worth. Wilkinson created a Change.org petition the day he was issued detention, asking that boys be able to wear nail polish. The Clyde Unified Independent School District did not comment on the incident, but they said on Friday that on an annual basis it "conducts a diligent and thoughtful review" of its dress code policies.

As per school district Parents and students are provided with a copy of the dress code prior to the start of each new school year

"That review process results in the development of a final dress code that is consistently implemented and enforced during the next school year. Parents and students are provided with a copy of the dress code prior to the start of each new school year," the district said. "Questions or concerns with the dress code are reviewed individually, and the District cannot share any information regarding a specific student."

Repeated offences may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct

Searching at the student handbook, we notice that wearing lipstick and nail polish is banned for men. The power to decide whether a student breaks this dress code is granted to every campus administrator.

"Student will be given an opportunity to correct the problem at school," it says. "If not corrected, the student may be assigned to in-school suspension for the remainder of the day, until the problem is corrected, or until a parent or designee brings an acceptable change of clothing to the school. Repeated offences may result in more serious disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct."

As per Wilkinson, It makes him really sad because he believes that there are other people who feel like this

Wilkinson, whereas, is convinced that this dress code is restrictive and goes against personal liberty. "It's really sad to me because I feel like it's 2020 and we should be progressing and not taking steps back," he said in a phone interview Saturday.

"And it makes me really sad because I know that there are other people who feel like this and feel like they can't express themselves and that they never will be able to because of people like this, who are not open-minded enough to see another perspective. I'm not taking off my nails and I'm staying in ISS because it's completely wrong," he said.

Petition from Wilkinson has been successful, with more than 35,000 people signing it to express their support

The teenager consulted with the principal and vice-principal of the school where he was told that once he would remain in detention until the rules are not followed. However, the petition from Wilkinson has been successful, with more than 35,000 people signing it to express their support. He said he believes the school will be motivated by this and change its dress code policies. He has definitely gained the love of his peers and the online community, though.
