The capital city of Burma, which is six times the size of New York City, is all but abandoned. And, practically no one has ever heard of it before. Why?
This Abandoned City Is 6 Times The Size Of NYC, And Nobody’s Heard Of It
#1 Nobody Has Ever Heard Of This City
There is a town in Burma that almost the whole of the western world has never heard of, which is weird because it's six times the size of NYC. Stranger still, it's also the country's capital city. Ten years ago the Burmese government decided they would move the capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw, which was viewed as a strange decision because nobody had ever heard of it.
#2 The Capital Of Burma
In case you don't know, Burma is a country in Southeast Asia and has one of the strictest military regimes on the planet. They haven't allowed democracy to flourish, even though the country's residents are desperate for political change. Since the regime decided to move the capital, it has effectively been out of bounds to westerners which seems incredibly odd, as it's cost billions to build.
#3 Virtually Vacant
It was designed to house millions of people, but the whole metropolis is basically vacant. On an average day, only a few government workers can be seen in the city. There are barely any residents, which of course makes the whole thing even more bizarre. The streets are designed for lots of cars and people, but they are practically empty which is quite the mystery.
#4 Built In The Middle Of The Jungle
The city was built in the middle of a jungle in quite an unsettled region of the country, but there is very little trouble as there are so few people there. Some say they decided to move inland to avoid conflict with outsiders. Weirdly, the whole city has wifi, even though the restaurants and hotels lie completely and utterly without customers.
#5 Underground Tunnels Built By Korea
Some of the structures the government has built are incredibly beautiful, but sadly there are simply no eager tourists or happy citizens to enjoy them. There are rumours that Burma actually contracted technicians from North Korea to build a maze of underground tunnels underneath the deserted city. It's believed that is where many of the population is living, but that is uncertain. Much of Naypyidaw's history is incredibly mysterious, nobody knows when construction began, or exactly who built it.
#6 People Work There
One resident says ‘this city is mainly for government staff, government buildings, it's not very interesting here. Most people are not that happy; they are just living here because they can earn money because they can work here.' However, it is still unclear what work people do there, as the city appears vacant most of the time.
#7 Six Times Larger In Area Than NYC
Even despite the fact that the actual landmass is 6 times larger than New York City, it has been recorded that the city's population is at 1 million, but most people believe this is an exaggeration. The Chinese government reports that only 240,000 people actually reside in the city, with another 75,000 living outside of the area and commuting to work there.
#8 Restaurants, Shops, And Hotels
One strange site in Naypyidaw is the airport. There are a few workers at the brand new airport, but it is practically empty and has remained unused since it opened in 2011. There are several empty housing developments and shopping centers, as well as a capital building and two museums. Naypyidaw was supposed to be a globally recognized tourist center with shops and restaurants, but that didn't really happen. Instead, there are odd tourist sites like the Flight Cafe, where a plane crashed and was turned into a restaurant. This has everyone baffled as well because the government does not allow tourists to the area.
