The elephant immediately rushed behind a thin pole to hide after being seen overeating on some sugarcane in a farmer's field. When the locals watched the culprit's daring attempt to hide from them, they couldn't help but chuckle. The trespasser stood steady behind the post, the spotlight focused on it. It may have been reasoned that if it remained still, the local farmers would not be able to see it.

The amusing scene was captured on camera by one of the locals. And when they shared it on Facebook, the world couldn't get enough of the cuteness and comedy. The 'crime' occurred in one of Chiang Mai's sugarcane fields in northern Thailand. Thailand now has roughly 4,000 elephants. Half of this population is domesticated, while the other half lives in park reserves.

Sugarcane, grass, tiny plants, and fruit are all favorites of elephants. When given the opportunity, kids will not hesitate to steal their favorite meal. They will even destroy local crops in order to gorge themselves on free food. Elephants invading sugarcane crops are thus highly prevalent in the nation. Even if the farmers construct a fence around the land, these enormous animals will knock it down. Farmers must therefore keep vigil, especially at night, to keep these tusked burglars at bay.

However, elephants may still be cunning at times. And this adorable elephant has a wicked sense of humor. It performed an excellent job of hiding behind a post to avoid detection. Because the elephant got away with the crime only because of that stupid gesture. The photo soon went popular on multiple social media sites, with over 1,000 individuals sharing it in less than two weeks. A Twitter user also posted a video of elephants on a vehicle eating sugarcane put on a nearby truck.
