This is a story about a deputy sheriff from McHenry County Sherrif's Office in Illinois. This particular department has over 400 people in its employ. They are described as "conservators of the peace." Officers often are able to come home and tell some crazy stories to their families, but this story here takes the cake.

This deputy was just returning from a short vacation. The day that he came back to work, he found that his car was not road ready. The issue was minor, but he had to take it in for repairs before he could take it out on the road. Little did he know that this would not be a quick, ordinary trip to the garage.

He had a broken headlight, and he took his squad car to their local mechanic to fix it. He expected it to just be a normal quick repair and hoped to be on the road right away. This standard repair ended up becoming so much more.

The mechanic opened everything up to change out the bulb, but what he found was truly strange. Wires were chewed up, and he had to now task himself to find out what in the world could have done that kind of damage in the few short days the deputy was on vacation.

There is any number of reasons as to why the wiring could have been frayed, but rodents tend to be the culprits in cases like these. Rodents will get inside stationary vehicles and chew up the wiring costing the car owner a lot of money in repairs. As the mechanic continued working on the car, he found the strangest thing.

While fixing the wiring, the mechanic found a bunch of leaves. This confirmed his suspicion that rodents had done the damage to the wiring. But, when he followed the trail of leaves, he found the true source of the problem.

Meanwhile, as the mechanic was working on his car, the deputy had gone back to work. He thought his car would be available in a short amount of time. After all, it doesn't take that long to fix a broken headlight. But when the deputy got a call from the mechanic, he knew this quick repair job had turned in to so much more.

The deputy was summons back to the shop by the mechanic telling him that he could not explain the real issue on the phone. He had to come see for himself what was really going on with his patrol car. What he saw left him in utter disbelief.

The mechanic told the deputy that he would not have believed him over the phone and he had to see for himself. The deputy had no idea what to expect, but he was preparing himself for the absolute worst. At first, all the deputy could see was a pile of leaves. He had to get really close to see what was really there.

Once he got up close, he realized that it was not just a bunch of leaves. It was, in fact, a nest of leaves, and inside this nest was four baby squirrels all curled up together sleeping peacefully. The mechanic said this was a first for him and his shop.

Since the mechanic was an animal lover, he did not want to disturb the nest or cause any duress or damage to the baby squirrels. He carefully removed the wheel of the car and moved the nest, babies and all, without even waking them. Since the nest was found in this deputy's car, he felt it was his responsibility to take care of the babies.

They removed the squirrels from the vehicle, nest and all, and moved them into a box... nest and all. The deputy then took the box home to where his car was parked hoping to reunite them with their mother.

The deputy was worried that he might have disturbed the nest or added his scent to it and the mother would not return for her babies. But, the mother squirrel returned to where she had left her sleeping babies. She gathered them up and moved them to a new home. We hope that this time she puts them somewhere more safe, but nesting in cars is common practice because of the heat that the cars give off. It could lead to very sad, painful outcomes, though.

It is best to make your car seem less attractive to animals like this. One tip is to keep the hood of your vehicle open so that the vehicle stays cooler. Another option is to spray taste deterrents under the hood to repel rodents from biting on wires. Bitter apple spray is great for that.

You could also ask your vet or your mechanic for more tips to keep rodents out from your vehicles to avoid damage to your car. If you do come across a nest in your vehicle, we hope that you follow in this deputy's footsteps and are careful to gently remove them or call for animal control to help you out.
