No one knows exactly how sweet Nico spent the first six years of his life, but it's clear that it was filled with pain. When he arrived at a shelter in Los Angeles back in 2009, his wounds pointed to a history of dog fighting.
Nico was close to being euthanized when one woman changed his whole life with a single heartbreaking photo.

When he arrived at a shelter in Los Angeles back in 2009, his wounds pointed to a history of dog fighting. Aside from his harshly clipped ears, which appeared to be crudely cut with kitchen shears, he was deaf, covered in fleas and dirt, and had several cancerous tumors on his head and body. Unfortunately, the shelter decided to label the poor guy as "dangerous" and his chances of finding the help he desperately needed grew smaller and smaller. Nico was close to being euthanized when one woman changed his whole life with a single heartbreaking photo. Nikki Audet from the Mutt Scouts rescue organization shared this image on Facebook, where it soon spread across thousands of news feeds.
His sad, hopeless stance touched the hearts of several kind people who reached out to offer help.
#2 Puggles & Pitties founder Kelly Gibson drove from San Diego to meet the poor pup and at least offer him a more humane euthanization.
But as soon as she saw his true, sweet nature, she knew he deserved so much more.
Gibson took Nico out of the shelter and into veterinary care while she organized a way to help him finally find a loving forever home. Working with the Humane Society of Hamilton County, Indiana, they raised money and mapped out a plan to transport the pup from California to their shelter in Noblesville.
Over the next several weeks, Nico made the long journey, thanks to 45 kind strangers offering their driving services.
#3 There he was adopted by his new mommies, Bridget Swan and Melissa Garris.
#4 He received treatment for his cancer, which unfortunately returned, and now spends every day surrounded by love.
Along with two cats, who took time warming up to him, Nico also has a sister, Brisby, a pit bull mix who is also deaf.

Thank goodness someone took the time to actually meet this lovable boy before it was too late. The harsh label his original shelter put on him was so clearly undeserved.
Nico will still require a lot of attention and care, but he's finally in the right hands.
