Trying to nail down who is a millennial isn't any easier, there's no real specific time period other than the generation after Generation X and most people tribute the title to anyone who came into adulthood around the year 2000 or later. In general, there's probably hundreds of factors that led to the personality conflicts of today's young adults but one guy's rant about millennials and their sense of entitlement is going viral for resonating with so many, both those of Generation X and even many millennials themselves.

His name is Simon Sinek and his words are really resonating, specifically how he addresses the millennial's sense of entitlement in the workplace, impatience, technology, the effects of parenting, and environment on our relationships, happiness, and very mindset.

What really helps Sinek's video resonate with so many is that he explains how millennials were 'dealt a bad hand.' Explaining the problem without shifting all of the blame on the individuals who can't change how they were raised or how their upbringing affected their low self-esteem, higher suicide rates, unrealistic expectations, social media addictions, lack of sense of fulfillment, and certainly not superficial relationships.

So, what exactly did Simon say that has rocked the internet so intensely? Keep reading and catch the video!

Simon Sinek's viral rant about millennials is rocking the Internet because of how he presents his argument. Simon focuses on how today's "failed parenting strategies" have mislead millennials, leading them to think that they are particularly special and can have anything they want in life simply because they want it! Parents also managed to convince their children and give them a mindset that thanks to their parents they can have anything they want, all it takes is a little fussing.

Another important note that Sinek touches on is "participation trophies," and how they've morphed the mindset of an entire generation. Participation awards are trophies that go to everyone, particularly the losers. Participation trophies have been proven in some cases to devalue the award of those who worked harder and played better all for the sake of the person's feelings who didn't play as well or work as hard.

Simon's powerful statement:

"So you take this group of people, and then they graduate school and they get a job, they’re thrust into the real world, and in an instant they find out: they’re not special, their mums can’t get them a promotion, you get nothing for coming in last, and by the way you can’t just have it because you want it."

In an instant, their entire self image is shattered. So you have an entire generation that’s growing up with lower self esteem than previous generations.

As someone who falls into the realm of millennial, depending on your perspective, I will admit that Sinek's rant brought some things to my mind to take into consideration, especially what he says about technology and our cellular devices. We have a rule in our home that helps us avoid snubbing each other and focus on some valuable family time without our devices and I think Sinek's words just really helped cement in my mind that it's a good idea to put our phones down and spend some quality time together.

Verdict is still out on those participation trophies, though. It sure seems like that is one dividing subject matter!
