#1
On the surface, Dennis Rader led a very normal life. The lifetime Kansas resident was president of his church council, and lived with his wife and two children.
#2
Everyone who knew Dennis thought the world of him. But little did they know that underneath his normal exterior was the heart of one of America's most terrible serial killers.
#3
His killing spree began in 1974 with all four members of the Otero family. One by one, he tortured and killed each of them. Afterwards, he sent a note to the police demanding that they call him BTK, or Bind Torture Kill.
#4
BTK continued to kill throughout the 70s and 80s, his rituals becoming more twisted and bizarre. Photos were later found of him torturing his victims, and sometimes even dressing up in their clothing.
#5
As the killings went on, Wichita residents became intensely paranoid and began installing elaborate home security systems. Little did they know that BTK's day job was installing these very systems for ADT Security Services, knowledge he used to easily slip into the homes of his victims.
#6
BTK claimed ten victims before he was finally apprehended in 2005, after police traced the metadata on a floppy disk he had sent to them.
#7
BTK was convicted of all ten counts of murder and sentenced to ten consecutive life sentences. He'll spend the rest of his days in solitary confinement at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Kansas.
This just goes to show that you can't judge a book by its cover. People like this can have us all fooled.
