We could all do with a little peace and quiet every now and then. Well, if it's total silence you're after then the anechoic chamber is the place to go.

This room at Orfield Laboratories in South Minneapolis holds the record for the quietest place on Earth. It's 99.99% sound proof, which would be great if you wanted to scream about your boss without them hearing, but apparently it's not so great for people's mental wellbeing.

It's said that some people find it unbearable, and it's been known to cause hallucinations after a relatively short amount of time.

The founder of the room, Steven Orfield, said: ‘When it's quiet, ears will adapt. The quieter the room, the more things you hear. You'll hear your heart beating, sometimes you can hear your lungs, hear your stomach gurgling loudly.

‘In the anechoic chamber, you become the sound.'

‘It's used for formal product testing, for research into the sound of different things heart valves, the sound of the display of a cellphone, the sound of a switch on a car dashboard.'

If you're to go in the room you must be sat down or risk becoming disorientated. It was said that that the longest anyone could last in the room was 45 minutes.

The YouTube science channel Veritasium sent someone a long to find out more about the room, and test the theory that 45 minutes is as long as anyone could spend in there. Here's what happened.
