A Reddit user decided to share the snap of the untouched meal with a note stating: "Purchased April 2006, never refrigerated - do not eat!"

The shocking outcome of the experiment reveals a mould-free "fresh out of the drive-through" kind of McDonald's meal.

McDonald's doesn't exactly have the best reputation when it comes to their food. Anyone who goes through the drive-thru knows that they have a fry somewhere under their seat that has been there for months, when they finally find it when cleaning their car it looks almost as good when they first got it. It's no secret that the salt and other preservatives keeps McDonald's looking good for a while, so this woman on Reddit decided to see how it would look after a few years. By "a few years" I mean she kept it for a whole decade.

The picture looks like an average meal that you would purchase from the fast food giant.

One horrified user commented: "It definitely doesn't look 10-years-old.

"I'd believe it's a month old."

Another user was quick to point out: "McDonald's cooks the moisture out of most of their food, which is why it's rock hard if you reheat it, and is also why it looks the same after years."

One joked: "If McDonald's did mummification in ancient times, King Tut would look fabulous."

"Purchased April 2006, never refrigerated do not eat!" is what the post it note next to the meal says. After 10 years the burger looks a little shriveled and the fries look extra crispy. It's quite amazing how well it has held up.

So the question remains as to why it looks fine considering it was made in 2006? The answer is quite simple, the salt and the fact that it was kept in a relatively dry place has pretty much mummified the food. Without moisture mold has no chance of forming, and without mold the food wont rot. McDonald's has actually made an official statement as to why it happens. It's not a big conspiracy and it doesn't really mean that anything is wrong with the food that people should be worried about, bread that goes stale does the same thing. If you love McDonald's don't let this stop you from grabbing a bite during lunch, but I still advise against eating any that has been left out longer than a day.
