This Is What Happens To Your Body When You Hold Your Pee. I Had No Idea!

We've all been there. You have to go but the situation won't allow it.
Whether stuck in a line, on an airplane, or simply don't have immediate access to a toilet, we will hold it in until we can eventually unleash. We tend to forget that early advice from our parents, "when you feel the urge to go Junior, run to the toilet as fast as you can!"
It turns out Mom was right as holding it in really isn't that healthy at all. We probably realized this on some level, but never knew exactly why this was true. This video reveals why holding it in is not a good thing.

Mainly it's when you make it a habit, and you hold it in for a very long time. Usually we can store a couple of cups worth of urine, and then the urge kicks in. Tiny receptors on the inside of our bladders give us the warning that it is time to go. When we hold it in our bladder will remain closed off from the urethra with the help of cylindrical sphincters. This keeps it from leaking, and thus prevent us from pissing our pants.

Urinary retention can occur if one holds in their urine for long periods of time on a frequent basis. This is where you can't fully empty your bladder as the muscles weaken from all that time forcing yourself to hold it in. Infection is another danger as stored urine can be a breeding ground for bacteria to grow. A urinary tract or bladder infection could result.

Bladder bursting could also take place in extreme situations. Though very rare, it has occurred as some people have held it in for so long, the bladder bursts and they end up dying.
So of course the bottom line is to hit the bathroom when nature calls. Don't ignore nature by holding it in!
