This Man Filmed His Dog Every Day. The Reason? You'll Be Heartbroken.
#1
Meet Pegasus. She is a gorgeous Great Dane and was rescued by South African director and filmmaker Dave Meinert.
#2
Born to an irresponsible backyard breeder, most of the other puppies in her litter died and she herself was sick. She is double-Merle which means she suffers from a pigment deficiency that very often leads to deafness or blindness or both. Given her history and her coloring, she was never expected to live long.
#3
That was why Meinert rescued her. "She had already been born," he said, "nothing was going to change that. Rescuing her was a way for me to make sure she'd be looked after." He didn't want to focus on the negatives of Pegasus' life, instead he wanted to make a record of her healthy days however many of them there were - as a celebration of her life. At four-weeks old, he didn't know how much time they would have together but he wanted to capture each day of their lives together.
#4
Meinert set up a camera facing a treadmill that would help Pegasus get her daily exercise, no matter if she became deaf or blind. He also set up lights above the treadmill to ensure the lighting was the same.
#5
What he created was an amazing time-lapse video that spans five months and shows Pegasus walk and play. You get to see her change from a tiny four week old puppy to a big seven month old teenager.
#6
Pegasus gets sick now and then. She gets a cold and is always coughing or sneezing and tends to have stomach problems, but it is manageable. She doesn't live with Meinert anymore he has to travel for work a lot and it was hard to move Pegasus around. She now lives with a new family and has made a best friend named Luna, but Meinert still gets to visit with her.
It is still unclear how long Pegasus will live, but right now, Pegasus is here and she is loved and well cared for. That is really all that matters.
