This Professor Posted A Resume Of His Failures. Now Those 'Mistakes' Are Going Viral
#1 Johannes Haushofer, assistant professor of psychology and public affairs, lists the degree courses he didn't get into,
the journals that rejected his academic papers and the awards he did not win.
#2 Failure can feel humiliating and we tend not to talk about it too much.
That's why a Princeton professor's "CV of failures" has gone viral. It's refreshing to see someone who is so successful admit to when things haven't gone quite right.
#3 Princeton University professor has published a CV listing his career failures on Twitter,
in an attempt to "balance the record" and encourage others to keep trying in the face of disappointment.
#4 Professor Johannes Haushofer of Princeton compiled a list of all his failures instead, and the results of his confessions are pretty shocking.
#5 He didn't list the prestigious positions he's held over the years.
He didn't share the awards he got or the promotions he received. Instead, Professor Haushofer made "CV of Failures" to share with the entire world.
"This CV is unlikely to be complete -- it was written from memory and probably omits a lot of stuff," he explained.
#6 The document contains sections titled Degree programs I did not get into,
Research funding I did not get and Paper rejections from academic journals. It also includes Academic positions and fellowships I did not get and Awards and scholarships I did not get.
#7 Haushofer wrote that he created the document to “give some perspective”.
"Most of what I try fails, but theses failures are often invisible," he explained. "The successes are visible. I have noticed that this sometimes gives others the impression that most things work out for me," Haushofer wrote when he published the Failure Resume.
#8 Haushofer said the idea came from an article by Melanie Stefan, an academic at Edinburgh University.
being completely accurate, or listing every single missed opportunity, isn't the point of the CV of Failures. The professor's list of failure is a reminder that even successful people don't always succeed. There are many jobs you won't get, lots of things you'll want to get and don't...plenty of times that you'll fail. But these things can help you get to all those successes that you DO want to list on a resume.
#9 The CV of failures was, of course, embraced on Twitter as “inspiring”, “brilliant” and “beautiful”.
#10 The flurry of interest led Haushofer to his crowning “meta-failure”.
"This darn CV of Failures has received way more attention that my entire body of academic work."
