Meet Captain. When Captain arrived at Detroit Dog Rescue in November, the workers there didn't know much about him.
He'd been discovered on the streets of Detroit looking for food. He was terribly hungry and quite unwell, and he was just wearing a crimson collar. They quickly discovered, however, that he had an unusual nighttime routine.
The shelter has a lot of fluffy soft dog beds, but none of them appeal to Captain.
Every night, Captain drives by in front of his cardboard box. "All he wants at bedtime is a cardboard box," Detroit Dog Rescue founder Kristina Millman-Rinaldi posted on Facebook.
"This cardboard box, or whatever size box we have at the time, is the only way he'll sleep because it's the only way he's ever slept to feel safe."
Captain had to be treated for a lung illness and heartworm infection when he initially came to the shelter. He has since fully healed and is a favorite of everyone there.
Millman-Rinaldi says that Captain is a loνable darling who "will do anything for a scoop of peanut butter. He has the best wiggle butt and loνes showing off his tricks. Despite all he's been through, he is super sweet." He knows his basic commands and is great at walking on a leash.
Captain, according to his adoption advertising, is shy around men and would prefer to live in a household with a female owner. Captain gets along well with most dogs, but new pals must be introduced gradually.
Captain will also benefit from an owner who would continue basic training with him because he may be hesitant and new things might be scary for him.
