The softball star was on a trip to Mexico with a friend's family where she told her friend's father that she started to feel strange. Shotly after, the 16 year old suffered from heart attack and was pronounced dead.

According to her friends, she drank no water and spent time on beach drinking her favorite beverage, Red Bull. It is believed that the high amounts of caffeine she consumed and dehydration are what caused the heart attack.

According to scientists, too many energy drinks can trigger sudden cardiac arrest even in healthy people.
Almost one in three 12 to 19-year-olds regularly consume the drinks which often contain high levels of caffeine that can be bad for the heart. They can also contain "hidden" caffeine in the form of ‘masking agents' such as gurana, which comes from a Brazilian plant and is identical to caffeine found in coffee beans but at twice the concentration.

The international research team based at the Research Institute of Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, Spain, warned that energy drinks can trigger sudden cardiac deaths in young, apparently healthy individuals.

The number of annual hospital visits involving the drinks doubled from 2007 to 2011, the latest year for which data are available, according to a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Lanna's case may be an extreme example, but many people experience mild but similar reactions. Hospitalizations due to energy drink consumption are not uncommon, and the majority of those treated for excessive energy drink consumption were 18 to 25 years of age.
