People love to say you learn something new every day, and this discovery about nail clippers is proving that point for a lot of us.

Most people assume nail clippers only exist for one simple job, which is trimming your nails, especially if you have no interest in walking around with Cynthia Erivo-level claws.

Experts have also warned that letting nails grow too long can cause hygiene issues, so owning a decent pair of clippers is not just practical, it can also be better for your health.

Speaking to USA Today in 2022, Jeffrey Kaplan, a biology professor at American University, explained why nail length matters, saying: "The longer the nail, the more surface area there is for microorganisms to adhere."

"Studies have found 32 different bacteria and 28 different fungi underneath fingernails."

He added that whether nails are natural or artificial does not change the risk, as longer nails make it easier for bacteria and fungi to stick around and harder to remove them through normal handwashing or scrubbing.

Kaplan also warned that these bacteria can enter the body through everyday habits like scratching, nail-biting, nose-picking, or finger-sucking, which can then lead to infections.

While experts have made it clear why trimming nails is important, there is another detail about nail clippers themselves that continues to confuse people, and that is the tiny hole built into them.

Many people have ignored this feature for years, assuming it served no real purpose, but the hole is actually designed so clippers can be attached to keychains, toiletry bags, or other small storage items.

A Facebook post recently went viral after one man shared how he finally learned what the small hole was for.

The post said: "My mother-in-law couldn't stop laughing when she realized I had no idea what the tiny hole in a nail clipper is for. Now I wonder... am I the only one who never knew?"

"I was so embarrassed — I'd literally never thought about it before."

While it might seem logical to assume that people with very long nails are inviting bacteria into their lives, nail technician Kayla Newman from North Carolina says that has not been her experience.

"Generally people who have long nails know how to maneuver with them and keep them clean," she explained.

"If you're spending upwards of $60 to get your nails done and you don't keep them clean, that doesn't make sense."

Honestly, she does make a fair point.
