Tomm Tennent: Unique Baby Born With Enough Skin To Cover The Body Of A Five-Year-Old Child

In 1993, a baby boy named Tomm Tennent from South East Australia was born. The child's physical appearance left not only the doctors but also the parents and anyone else who saw the baby.

The story of the child's mysterious condition left the whole world equally stunned. The baby was born with enough skin to cover the body of a 5-year-old which made everyone wonder what life would bring for this boy.

Tomm’s parents knew that their baby would be different but no ultrasound could prepare the parents for this. When doctors initially informed them that there are complications with the pregnancy, they even considered ending it but luckily they didn't. 

Talking to 60 Minutes Australia, Tomm’s dad, Geoff Tennent, said back in 2003, “When he came out I was quite shocked (…) I didn’t think a human, or a little baby, could ever look like that.”

Tomm's mom speaks about the first time she saw her child: “My heart came up to my throat, but at the same time it was lovely to pick him up and cuddle him,” she said.

Due to his condition, Tomm has spent a lot of time at the hospitals and it was not due to the fact that he was sick but it was because doctors wanted to help him with his condition. 

Since the literature never documented a case like his before, they had a hard time learning what caused him to have so much excess skin.

With further research, doctors were finally able to give Tomm and his parents some answers.

Few experts saw similarities between Tomm's condition with the Chinese dog breed Shar-Pei. They discovered that Tomm’s level of Hyaluronic acid, found in skin, was 100 times higher than normal, which is the case with Shar-Pei puppies.

Now the experts knew that these levels drop as the puppies grow and so the doctors hoped that similar would be the case with Tomm and they were right.

But assuming his physical appearance, it is no surprise that the child faced enough difficulties before reaching that certain point in life. Despite his looks, Tomm has always been a very lovable child. 

When asked if he had any concerns about how his friends saw him, Tomm told 60 Minutes, “Not really (…) because they are my friends and they don’t really care how I look like. Sometimes they (people) say I look cool, sometimes they say I look really cool, and sometimes they don’t say anything.”

Today, Tomm looks completely normal and has no excess skin at all.

Many people also wondered how after all these years Tomm is living. According to his Facebook, he’s happily married to his wife Hannah.

“Life’s simple. You make choices, and you don’t look back,” Tomm posted on his Facebook profile, and we assume this quote sums up his mindset and whole life.
