Tornado Destroys Church In Mississippi, Leaves Bible Open To This Passage

After a destructive tornado wreaked havoc in southern Mississippi, staffers from William Carey University were left sorting through the wreckage.
Between ruined buildings and uprooted tree trunks, they stumbled upon an awe-inspiring sight: within the campus’ church, resting on the pulpit was an open Bible, undisturbed by the tornado.

Even more perplexing was the open page, Psalm 46, which reads, among other passages, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

“No building was left untouched,” said Rick Wilemon, an art instructor at the Christian college who took some photos of the unusual scene, “So many appear to be total losses.”

Although the Bible was part of a fixture in the chapel holding it in place, the fact that nearby windows and other objects were torn away amplifies the book’s unique preservation.

The moment has heightened spirits on campus in wake of the powerful EF-3 tornado.
“It is remarkable that something so inspiring to our community is also inspiring to the nation,” said Wilemon.
