Donald Trump appeared to flip off a Ford plant employee on Tuesday after a tense exchange in which the president was called a ‘pedophile protector’.

The moment quickly drew attention after footage of the interaction began circulating online.

The incident took place during a scheduled visit to a Ford manufacturing plant in Michigan.

According to reports, a disgruntled worker began shouting a series of insults and expletive-filled remarks in Trump’s direction as he moved through the facility.

Video captured at the scene shows Trump pointing toward the employee before appearing to mouth the words ‘f--k you’ and raising his middle finger in response.

While the reaction was not what many would expect from a sitting president, the White House moved quickly to defend Trump’s behavior.

Officials said the response was justified given the nature of the confrontation.

"A lunatic was wildly screaming expletives in a complete fit of rage, and the President gave an appropriate and unambiguous response," White House Communications Director Steven Cheung said in a statement.

A roughly 30-second clip obtained by TMZ shows someone shouting toward the president as he walks through the plant.

The video does not clearly capture exactly what was being said at that moment.

According to TMZ’s account, the individual was allegedly accusing Trump of being a ‘pedophile protector’.

The comment appeared to reference criticism surrounding delays in the release of the full set of Jeffrey Epstein-related files.

Following sustained public pressure, the Justice Department has since released thousands of documents connected to the Epstein case.

The footage also shows Trump pointing toward the factory floor several times while continuing his walk through the plant.

Just before exiting the camera’s view, Trump appears to raise his middle finger toward the person who had been shouting at him.

He also seems to say or mouth something that closely resembles ‘f--k you’ on two occasions.

After the incident, Ford’s Executive Director of Corporate Communications, David Tovar, addressed the situation in a statement to CNN, saying:

"We had a great event today and we're proud of how our employees represented Ford. We've seen the clip you're referring to.

"One of our core values is respect and we don't condone anyone saying anything inappropriate like that within our facilities.

"When that happens, we have a process to deal with it but we don't get into specific personnel matters."

In the aftermath of Trump’s widely criticized response, many social media users shared their reactions.

A large number of people condemned the president’s behavior and questioned his conduct.

"Very presidential," wrote one person.

"Classy as always," added another.

Not everyone agreed with the criticism, however.

One person defended Trump’s actions, writing: "Trump has disappointed me with a lot of things in his 2nd term but this is what I like about him."
