President Donald Trump has rolled out plans for a new national athletic competition called the 'Patriot Games' to mark the country’s 250th anniversary next year.

He says the Games will be part of what he calls 'the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen', with two competitors — one young man and one young woman from every state and territory — going head-to-head for the top spot.

The White House has not yet said what the winners will receive beyond bragging rights. Trump has made it clear, though, that he expects the event to be a major success and a centerpiece of the anniversary celebrations.

"Already, we've had big celebrations to commemorate the 250th birthdays of the Army, the Navy and the United States Marines, but there is much, much more to come," he said in a YouTube announcement for Freedom 250, described as a 'national, non-partisan organization leading the Administration's celebration of America's 250th birthday'.

"We're going to have a good time."

The 'Patriot Games' are scheduled to take place in fall 2026, with Trump describing the contest as 'an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes, one young man and one young woman from each state and territory'.

He added, "But I promise there will be no men playing in women's sports. You're not gonna see that. You'll see everything but that."

So far, details about the exact format, events, and selection process remain limited, but the official Freedom 250 website has started to tease what is coming, saying: "From opening heats to the live final day in front of a live audience, these competitors will light the torch for a new generation of Americans."

If this is reminding you of The Hunger Games, you are not alone. Many critics on social media have already drawn the comparison and raised eyebrows at how closely the idea seems to echo the fictional competition.

The announcement bore a striking resemblance to the Hunger Games Lionsgate

For anyone unfamiliar, The Hunger Games is a dystopian book and movie franchise where two children from each 'district' are chosen to take part in a brutal survival contest, with the kids forced to fight to the death.

To be clear, there is no suggestion that this is what the president has in mind, but the framing has still left people uneasy. The overlap in structure has led some to question why this concept was chosen as the model for a patriotic sports event.

The Democratic Party also highlighted the similarities by sharing a clip from the first Hunger Games movie, where the villainous President Coriolanus Snow (played by Donald Sutherland) lays out the rules and purpose of the fictional games.

"And so it was decreed that each year, the various districts of Panem would offer up, in tribute, one young man and woman to fight to the death in a pageant of honor, courage, and sacrifice," Snow says in the clip.

"The lone victor, bathed in riches, would serve as a reminder of our generosity and our forgiveness. This is how we remember our past."

"This is how we safeguard our future."

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker also joined in the criticism, reposting an image of President Snow raising a champagne glass in a clear nod to the parallels between the movie’s deadly spectacle and Trump’s newly announced 'Patriot Games'.
