Our common understanding is that there is one way to get rid of the poo in the loo. Flushing it. Frank's Café, a London bar has decided to move in eco-friendly direction, suggesting that there is more than one way to get rid of the poo. For them, sawdust is the answer.

The idea of no water or composting toilets was created in view of the decreasing water resources. The motivation to save the planet and reduce water wastage brought the transformation of toilets.

The bar opened in 2009, using the top floor of Peckham Levels car park, providing the customers with a chance to enjoy their visit with a magnificent view. Even though the café opens for a few months during summer, it is a notable attraction in the vicinity.

Any idea how much water usage is by a traditional toilet? 1.6 gallons! You add the number of houses around the country and can understand how much water is being consumed to just flush the loo. To deal with this excessive water use a company has come up with a novel solution of using composting toilets. The rule is simple, no water to be used for flushing.

This idea of eco-friendly poo disposal is incorporated by Frank’s Café in South East London located in Peckham Levels. The building served as a car park previously and currently is a center for independent businesses thriving under the influence of creativity.

Along with the choice of a scenic view, Frank’s Café has also gained attention due to the use of its eco-loos. The concept of eco-loos is based on making the toilet environmentally sustainable.

And not to worry, you won’t be able to see whatever is in there or be bothered by the foul odor. All you need to do after you are done is put sawdust in and you will be good to go. The design of the toilet is also different from the typical ones as the wooden shelf bears the toilet seat.

This unique toilet idea was made possible by ComPOOst Solutions, a company that specializes in making toilets that are environmentally friendly. The company is located in Somerset on an organic farm, making it the source of inspiration to find environment-friendly ways to dispose human waste, or better, turn it into something useful.

Technically, fertilizers are loaded with chemicals. But ComPOOst Solutions does not use any chemicals, rather lets the nature take its course and allows the poo to break down without any chemicals. The urine is filtered while the poo remains, turning into an eco-friendly fertilizer without causing any bad odor as the use of sawdust and the extraction of urine eliminates the possibility of any bad smell remaining.

When at Frank’s Café you are not likely to see the “out of order” sign at the toilet door as the staff checks the functioning of the toilet after every 30 minutes and makes sure that everything is impeccable.

A sign is there at the entrance of the toilet to let the visitors know that there will be no flushing, explaining how sawdust is a better alternative as it saves the environment. So at Frank’s Café, no flushing in the loo, just sawdust on the poo.
