The soldier’s throat was allegedly cut before he was thrown into a pit and left for dead
A Ukrainian soldier has opened up about the horrifying abuse he claims to have suffered while serving on the front lines.
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which began in February 2022, has already led to devastating losses. According to Statista, more than 13,000 civilians have been killed and nearly 34,000 have been injured since the start of the war.
Meanwhile, the New York Times previously reported that within the first year and a half of fighting, the death toll among Russian and Ukrainian troops combined had already reached around 500,000.
There have long been disturbing reports of torture carried out by Russian soldiers. One of the most shocking claims was that the body of a Ukrainian journalist was returned to her homeland without internal organs.
Now, another harrowing story has come to light through a Ukrainian soldier who managed to survive what appears to have been an attempted execution.
33-year-old National Guardsman Vladislav allegedly had his throat slit before being thrown into a pit with seven other captured soldiers and left to die.
Believing all the men inside were dead, Russian troops reportedly covered the bodies with trash to conceal them.
But Vladislav miraculously survived. Despite his life-threatening injuries, he somehow managed to crawl away and endured five days of unimaginable pain before finally reaching a Ukrainian base.
Now, after his survival, he is sharing his experience in detail.
Since Vladislav is currently unable to speak, his wife Victoria spoke to Ukrainian news outlet Suspilne on his behalf, explaining the horrors he endured. She said her husband wrote everything in a diary to communicate what had happened.
Victoria recalled: "At first, they caught him alone, and then they took him to the basement, where there were completely different soldiers. There were two of them there, and these two were mocking them."
She added that Vladislav was captured after his brigade lost control of a key position near Pokrovsk a few weeks earlier.
According to reports, soldiers captured before Vladislav suffered unimaginable brutality. Some had their eyes gouged out, lips cut off, and even ears, noses, and genitals mutilated.
In Vladislav’s case, although his hands were bound when he was tossed into the pit, he managed to find a broken glass bottle and used it to cut himself free, giving him the chance to escape.
His doctor later told reporters that his injuries were severe and had begun to rot because of extreme blood loss and the time it took before he received treatment.
On August 17, Vladislav was rushed to a hospital in the Dnipropetrovsk region in extremely critical condition.
Since then, he has undergone multiple surgeries, and doctors are now working tirelessly to help him recover. Their hope is that with time, he will regain his ability to both breathe and speak independently again.
