To save money, a university student admitted to eating dog food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The unidentified man revealed that he started his peculiar diet after being dared to eat a bowl, and he has maintained it ever since he ran out of money.

The man wrote: "So I'm currently in college, and since I'm broke as f**k I have resorted to free dog foods.”

"I started eating dog food when my friend dared me, and I love it. Since that day I eat dog food at least once a day. Note that it is dry dog food, I never tried the wet ones."

His flatmates have taken notice of his eyebrow-raising meals and have questioned why he had so many bags of dog food, one of whom was left speechless when he revealed the food was for him.

Taking to Reddit, the man wrote: "When one of my other friends visited my room and saw heaps of dog food, he asked me why.”

"I told him it's for me and he just said 'what the f**k."

The anonymous student explained on the internet forum that he is now wondering whether it is healthy to go from human food to dog food, which put many people in awe.

One wrote: "Inexpensive dog food is loaded with barely digestible filler ingredients. You will poop more and not get the nutrients you're expecting.”

"It also is not subject to the same regulations as human food. It will often contain ground-up animal parts like chicken beaks, bones, feathers, etc.”

"Expensive dog food, made with quality ingredients, would not have these issues. But then that kind of defeats the purpose of saving money.”

"There are ways to eat human food very frugally. Rice and beans can go a long, long way and are going to taste a lot better than dog food and give you a more balanced diet. It's probably even cheaper than eating puppy chow, not sure. Learn to cook!"

"Pet food is not subject to the same health and safety standards or quality control as human food so I wouldn't recommend you continue doing this,” another Reddit user commented.

In addition to their concerns, Heathline had earlier issued a warning that people who consume dog food run the danger of "developing foodborne illnesses."

They explained: "Dog food isn't designed for the unique nutrition needs of humans, though it is made from ingredients that are technically safe for humans to eat.”

"Thus, it's not inherently toxic for humans and may be safe in an emergency. However, eating dog food may increase your risk of developing a foodborne illness."
