Autism has been a hot topic lately. A report from the CDC says that autism has become twice as prevalent as it was back in 2004. This disability is so complex that it has been categorized as a spectrum disorder. This is because there is no specific known cause and it impacts its sufferers differently.
A young boy named Oscar who is autistic has received wide-spread love lately. His mother is all too familiar with the implications that are associated with having a child with autism. Not only is Oscar autistic, he also has heart problems making ongoing cardiological care a necessity. Sadly, the combination of autism with his heart problems really limits the boy's physical activity.
Jen Goodland-Wyatt took her autistic son, Oscar, to TGI Fridays after a disappointing hospital visit where doctors to her that Oscar could not take karate due to his heart condition. She chose a Star Wars themed table for them to sit at and told the staff that Oscar is a "Star Wars-loving superhero."
That is what makes the news from the cardiologist so incredibly upsetting. Karate provided Oscar with a source of confidence that he could not find anywhere else. After one waitress heard Oscar's story, when she delivered him his menu, she leaned in to say, "I understand you’re a superhero – here’s your menu."
After their food arrived, one member of the staff handed Oscar two balloon models that were made especially for him. They even told the young boy he could order any dessert he wanted from the menu.
Oscar was incredibly happy and ordered the chocolate brownie for dessert. When his mother asked the staff why they were all so nice to her boy, one staff member said, "Because he’s a superhero!" A response that showed that the staff saw Oscar as more than an autistic boy. But, the real topper to this story is what was written on the bottom of their check. The staff applied a "Superhero" discount to their order making Oscar's dessert free.
Oscar's mother said, "it just goes to show that anyone can be anything they want." This is also a great demonstration that shows how a little kindness can go a long way to improving somebody's day.
