After narrowly avoiding being hit by an out-of-control automobile that careened over three lanes of traffic on a highway outside of Washington, D.C., on Monday, a Virginia police officer is grateful to be alive.
Virginia Police Officer Narrowly Avoids Getting Hit By Out-Of-Control BMW
Dramatic footage of an officer narrowly avoiding being struck by a car full of "high school-aged teenagers" while conducting a traffic check has been published by Virginia police.
According to Fairfax Deputy Police Chief Bob Blakley, the incident occurred on Monday along Fairfax County Parkway after an officer stopped a car for going 73 mph in a 50 mph zone.
The officer was captured on camera running for his life after spotting an out-of-control BMW cross the median.
After then, the automobile slammed into the one the officer had stopped, sending pieces of debris flying into the air while he was able to avoid being seriously hurt.
"The car involved in that collision yesterday was a whole lot of car for an inexperienced driver," Kevin Davis, the chief of police in Fairfax County, told reporters on Tuesday.
"It was going way too fast. It was a rocket, and then it became a missile."
The cop is shown hopping over a guardrail and radioing for assistance right after the crash.
"My cruiser got hit. The driver was struck.” He is heard informing first responders, "I'm attempting to check on injuries.”
Detectives found that the speeding BMW was traveling at "well over 120 mph" when it lost control, and "unquestionably, the driver was distracted," according to Blakley.
"That vehicle was just incapable of handling that curve at that speed," he said.
In a press release, Fairfax County Police said the "adult driver in the BMW 750 Series on the traffic stop was taken to the hospital with minor injuries not considered to be life-threatening and has since been released from the hospital."
"The officer sustained minor injuries. The juvenile driver of the BMW M3 and the two passengers sustained minor injuries,"
"The juvenile was charged with reckless driving."
Prior to displaying the video to reporters on Tuesday, Davis remarked, "It's just miraculous that we are not speaking under different circumstances. In all seriousness, it is.”
He described the incident as a "horrific crash that by all accounts should have resulted in much, much worse outcomes than it did."
"The Fairfax County Police Department is relieved that this crash did not result in a tragedy," the department said.
"This is an important reminder that life can change in an instant. It is the driver’s responsibility to drive safely and arrive safely."
Additionally, according to Fairfax County Police, the video presents an opportunity for parents and other adult caregivers to "have a conversation with their teen drivers about how their driving behavior can affect the lives of others."
