It’s a pretty big tip.

32-year-old Kasey Simmons works at an Applebee’s in Dallas, Texas, and one day a woman ordered some flavored water. At 37 cents, it was the cheapest thing on the menu. She left a tip of $500 (around £380), along with a napkin explaining why.

The napkin explained everything.

Simmons had been at the supermarket the day before when he saw an older woman who looked a bit down. Other shoppers ignored her, but he tried to cheer her up – and even ended up offering to pay for her shopping.

She had been feeling sad that day.

"It was only $17, but it’s not about the money – it’s about showing someone you care," he said. As he found out from the customer’s letter, the upset woman was the tip-givers mother. She had been feeling sad because it was the third anniversary of her husband’s death.

Kasey was touched by the gesture.

"On one of the most depressing days of the year," the napkin said, "you made my mother’s day wonderful. You insisted on paying. Told her she is a very beautiful woman."

"I have not seen this woman smile this much since dad died."

However, she didn’t leave her mother’s name. All Kasey knows is that he made a difference in a grieving woman’s life.
